Race and College Admissions

This is absolutely disgusting. How about emulating Asian successes rather than punish them?

Why should the individual Asian kid be punished because his ethnic group is successful?

Do you really want a doctor who was admitted to medical school by having the deck stacked in his favor? I don't. When I look at a diploma on the wall, I want to know it was earned and not gifted.

So what? George W. Bush went to Yale as a result of affirmative action.

No he went to Yale as a result of Daddy and legacy.

And so did the Kennedys - bet their daddy wrote some letters as well.

No. George W. Bush is a white person who got into Yale because he had a lot of relatives who had gone to Yale and had a lot of money. That's affirmative action.

I think it's safe to assume that everybody who has an M.D. earned that M.D.

No. In institutions of higher education, affirmative action refers to admission policies that provide equal access to education for those groups that have been historically excluded or underrepresented, such as women and minorities.

I thought it was Asians and white women.

+1 It is actually white WOMEN who have college cards stacked against them as there are significantly more of them applying these days.

Aren't white women the primary beneficiaries of affirmative action for jobs?

No blacks are.

This is my experience in the tech area. Might be nudged to look at more resumes for females (and honestly there are plenty of good candidates in my experience) but the push to hire Hispanic and especially Black candidates is intense.

blah blah - because their applications all look the same or very similar - same grades, same scores, same contrived activities. A school has a right to build a well rounded class mad dup of different kinds of people with different skills and talents.

+100. I may be a progressive in most issues, but I've finally come to agree that "the best way to stop discrimination based on race is to stop discrimination based on race"

Alternatively, the way to stop discrimination on the basis of race is to speak openly and candidly on the subject of race, and to apply the Constitution with eyes open to the unfortunate effects of centuries of racial discrimination.

(I didn't write this; Sonia Sotomayor did.)

By any other name would smell as sweet.

Affirmation and preferential action for many centuries was always for whites (Anglo). George Bushes attended on this legacy of preferential and affirmative action for Whites (C/D average and all!)

Since, you do not like the term affirmative action for Whites (Anglo) let me coin a term for you. Please fell free to reference this.

Centuries of "automatic action" for Anglo-Americans (providing non equal access to education) with regards college admission decisions (D average GPA and all!). This automatic action has existed in the US for centuries.
