They were created to be MAGNETS - meaning pulling "the most affluent" [and white] kids into schools that did not have them to deal with segregation. Sorry Suzy can't have both a great quality HS and magnet school walking distance. The kids on the east side didn't have the HS to begin with, and now they have a magnet school that's pulling bright, diverse kids from all over. Good for them. |
And I went to hs in the 80s (not here) and bell time was 8:25 and we got out at 3:30 - much more civilized. Kids could take a zero period if they wanted, but it wasn't the start of the school. And sports didn't start at 5:30 in the morning... |
Same here. Zero hour was a choice. |

MCPS received 2,365 e-mails about bell times through February 2. 402 e-mails identified in what neighborhood or part of the county the e-mailer lives. 39% of those e-mails came from Bethesda and Chevy Chase. Is anybody surprised?

Yes, now that parents of coddled teens are trying to change the times, they are finding that the elementary school kids are having it worse. First off, they need more sleep. Kindergarten students need average 11hrs of sleep. I know my 5yr old sleeps 7:30-7:30 every day. Plus they are leaving for school when it is dark out and during the height of dark morning rush hour. Older elementary school kids can not bike because it is too dark in the Fall, Winter. http://www.newswise.com/articles/are-elementary-school-start-times-too-early-for-young-children |
So what the heck is your point? Many sports DO now start in the early AM. Figure skaters, crew training, swimming, diving, ice hockey, etc.. Okay so in the 80's when you went to school at 8:25am was it because middle school or elementary school was going in at 7:30am? No it wasn't. Because that is what the parents of these whiny teens want to happen. You can not live in a huge district with consistent overcrowding and overbuilding with no increase in schools and busses and expect that everyone starts at the same time. |
Yes lets give the poor kids so me lily white and asians to come in to show how stupid they are but at least bump up the scores a little bit. Great idea!! |
We are in a elementary school in Rockville and no one ever made a mention to this to us. Not the principal, not the teachers, not the PTA. My guess is that all the high schools made a big deal out of this and had their parents and students putting in their feedback. I wish I was given a chance. |
No not at all. They are all the spoiled rich kids who don't babysit younger siblings, have parents that have nanny's or flex work and none of the kids need to work after school. So the change benefits them. Schools in lower SES can't afford the change. They need the older kids to watch the younger ones and if not, the older ones are working to help make ends meet. People on DCUM are clueless that many high school kids NEED to work. |
+1 |
great points deaf ears, sadly |
| Not sure how all the rich people on this forum know what lower income people prefer. |
Not every kid is a jock like your daughter. Some kids love -- gasp! -- reading, cooking, sewing, building robots, etc. Some kids are on the computer for hours because they are incredibly smart and writing computer code is their hobby. Sure every teen "can" do what your daughter does, but we don't exactly need only swimmers in the world. I'd like to have doctors, computer scientists, authors, etc pursuing their passions from a young age, too, thank you. |
Your post is just stupid. Sorry, but it is. |
