s/o Why do people from the north think DC is the south?

Culturally speaking, it feels Southern to me.

+1 but I'm from northern New England. Now that I've been in DC for almost 15 years, I get that it's not really the south as in Deep South.

DC is technically in the mid-Atlantic region. It's not the Deep South, but historically, it was part of the South in terms of geography and culture. It's location was selected by Southern congressmen as the cost of agreeing to have the new federal government take over the war debts of the northern states.

That culture changed over time, first during the Civil War, but primarily as the federal government expanded during and after WWII.

JFK described Washington as a city with Northern charm and Southern efficiency.

It's neither charming nor efficient to mention that for like the fourth time in this thread.

+1. Though, NOVA was very southern back in the day, even Arlington. Probably started to change in the 70's.

I grew up in and around NOVA suburbs. It was most definitely considered southern. Perhaps not as much now, since there are so many transient families, but absolutely during my youth. It's all the newbies who are insisting DC "isn't the south". Kind of amusing.

I'm from upstate NY originally and don't think I've ever heard DC referred to as "The South." Although it was very common for folks to visit as a a kid in class trips, family vacations, etc. I find that people tend to use labels on something they don't really know.

Although if a northerner were to visit during a snowfall, I wouldn't blame them for thinking DC was part of the south.

Probably because they weren't here when it was? Having lived in Richmond area for a while I don't consider NoVA southern presently. But I cannot comment on 30 years ago.

I am from the Deep South and I don't feel any reason to ask for anyone's tolerance. Anyone who assumes that all the people from a certain area share any characteristic, positive or negative, is naive and uninformed. The idea of " tolerance" being necessary for any region of the country, or world for that matter, is condescending.

One inch of snow and there's a two hour school delay (surprisingly not closed for the day). No self-respecting northern city would delay school because of a mere dusting like this.

No northern city would fail to plow like this whole area seems to have, either.

No kidding. It's an embarrassment - any excuse to close down and cause drama. Talk about lazy!

"Oh, the conditions are so bad! Cars sliding everywhere!"

Well yes, that is what happens with snow. That is why it is necessary to CLEAR IT. To PLOW.

THANK YOU. WELL SAID. I can't believe how lazy people are here. Is that a southern thing?
