Basketball hoop at our house and we are caught between multigenerational neighbors

Yes, take the hoop down. For goodness sakes, let's not have any form of play for our children.

I told him I would think about his call but if my son was still in high school (4 years ago), I would allow him to play "all afternoon." How should all of us handle this in a multi-generational neighborhood? I only want to regulate the times and not implement and enforce breaks.

Remove the hoop. It puts you in the position of being the police for your hoop. Your kids have outgrown it.

PP, I am curious: what do you think a front yard is for?

What it is NOT for is having groups of teens and college students hang out and make noise with their shrieks and basketballs -- but I am pretty sure you can't afford a yard in the first place, so you think why not use someone else's yard?

PP's neighbor probably painted his front door charcoal gray instead of the HOA-approved dove gray. It's ruined her entire week!

I would take the hoop down or I would tell the family that other neighbors are having a problem with you. You may not agree with it you can add but really we all have something we don't like.

If it's legal, screw him. If he wants to live where it's quiet he can move to the middle of nowhere. There are noise ordinances for a reason.

Sorry but if grampa wanted to go out and weed whack at 7:00 AM on a Sunday - because he has NO idea anymore what it's like to have to wake up early for work or be up with a baby all night - he'd have no sympathy for any of you I am quiet sure.

Kids playing basketball unfortunately make a lot of noise--and I am in my 40s. I think it is the constant playing for hours--versus playing for an hour, stopping for an hour, playing for an hour. With that said, it's your yard and hoop and you can do with it what you want.

+1 ....and my DD loves to play basketball. That's why DH takes her to the park to play. The thumping would drive me insane and I would not subject my neighbors to it either.

Your hours are more than reasonable. We don't let our kids play loudly outside until after 9AM on weekends, nor do we mow grass, use the leaf blower or any other loud yardwork before 9AM. That's being considerate of your neighbors. After 9AM, well, people need to be able to get that stuff done. We also don't let the play loudly outside after 8:00. If the neighbors have a kid with an earlier bedtime, they let us know and we respect that. We do have neighbors (like the PP) that let their dogs out at 6AM, leave them there for a couple hours during which time they bark and get into fights with each other. It's very nice of you to make the basketball goal available to other kids. Ignore the crotchety neighbors.

Some kids and adults sleep later. I find before 11 rude. I can see an hour or two a day but I would go insane listening to thumping for hours a day, which happened to us. I have health issue and need rest.

11:00? You're nuts. You may like to sleep late, but there's no universe in which 11 is rude.

You must have a really poorly insulated house if you can hear the dribbling of a basket ball outside from inside your house. You'd have to be completely quite while inside and actually listening for the sound. If you were busy doing something, watching tv or whatever, you'd never hear it.
