It bugs me when people bring lame things to a potluck

Cleanliness of other people's kitchens, do they lick their fingers inbetween, worse, and so on?

I'm not a clean freak but it does skeeve me quite a bit.

I have a friend like you. She will eat stuff I prepare but never anyone else's food. She knows I am a stickler about cleanliness expecially when it comes to food for others. That said I live on the edge and will typically try stuff at a potluck. However when we have a work potluck typically everything is purchased at a store or restaurant. We love to do potluck happy hours and often a small group with pitch in an order wings or pizza, and others will just stop by whole food so we don't have the home cooked worry.

As for the finger licking thing, for years I was the work cake cutter b/c I could not stand the thought that someone might do this. I think it is a reflex for some, they don't even realize they are doing it.

Anyone do family Sunday dinners where every family brings a dish?

People want chips. It's a party. People who bring chips know some people want chips. Don't assume everyone wants your foo-foo homemade whatever.

Yes, at a kids party, the cupcake arranger (some mom) could not stop licking her freaking fingers. ugh.

My only complaint about potlucks are the people who bring the sam's/Costco mini-quiches. We've all had them one time, we all know they are bland and dry. Don't being them.

So you never eat out?

Hello? Department of Health? There are regulations, at least.

They need to make the list sent to everyone so that people don't bring the same things and can't hide their lame items.

If there are no sign up sheets, the hosts should be prepared for people to bring convenience food. I don't cook so I either bring a store bought appetizer (dip/salsa/hummus and chips) or a store bought dessert. Plenty of people eat what I bring so..... If there is a sign up sheet, I try to sign up early so I can buy drinks, paper goods, plastic utensils, etc.

I would like to try homemade fufu. I've only ever eaten the instant kind.

I only eat store bought food at potlucks and I never eat food from people who have cats. Ewwww...

We do potluck BBQs several times over the summer. Sometimes people go all out, sometimes those same people arrive with a bag of chips. I'm the same. I'd rather have them attend the party than decline because they don't have time to make something. And frankly, I'm not a huge fan of pasta salads or most other premade grocery store foods, and it seems like those go mainly untouched anyway.

Urgh, the bane of my vegetarian potluck existence! There's nothing worse than ruining a perfectly good vegetable or especially Mac and Cheese with meat. I kid. Sort of.
