It bugs me when people bring lame things to a potluck

I find it incredibly annoying when people bring lame things to a potluck--a bag of potato chips, a box of cheap cookies, a bag of mini carrots, etc. If you're invited to a nice potluck, bring something substantial--and put a little time and effort into it! If you don't like to cook, that's okay--there are plenty of things you could bring that don't involve cooking (nice salad, veggie tray, etc.) And if you don't even want to do that then just go to Whole Foods or somewhere nice and pick up a few large side dishes.

I'm always the person who takes the time to cook something homemade for a potluck or brings a main course, and then is always disappointed when the rest of the food sucks. What is wrong with people? Aren't they embarrased to bring such a paltry contribution to the potluck? Does this bother you too?

OP,
Did you host a potluck, or is this stemming from potlucks you've attended?

I don't pay attention to who brings what, unless I want the recipe for something.

Yes it's totally annoying. I do a regular potluck with a group of friends and we have a rule that the person hosting provides one main dish and things like drinks, salad, and sometimes dessert. We word the invite potluck at my place I will make (insert main dish) and take care of salad, drinks and dessert. Please let me know what you are bringing. Sometimes we plan out the menu and people choose off that list. This can only be done with good friends though I think.

OP here. Yeah, I hosted a potluck this weekend and everyone brought lame things for the most part. But I've noticed the same thing with most other potlucks I've been to.

There is no such thing as a nice potluck. Maybe they people bringing lame things are protesting the potluck "party".

Back home, people had fan favorite dishes that they would make and bring. I think this area has a lot of working parents and people who don't cook much, and so it creates a downward cycle of low expectations.

I haven't had this issue in my circles, but if everything else is good with the people you're socializing with, I wouldn't make this a reason to get upset with them.

We have potlucks for school. Sign up genius. No one wants to put "chips"

Most of the potlucks I attend are at work and anything I bring from home has to commute with me through 5 blocks on foot, a bus ride and a Metro ride (for which I may or may not get a seat). We have only one car, so I can't drive in for the day. I have an infant and a 2-year-old, and am an exclusive pumper whose husband works until 10:30 every night. At least 75% of the people in our office are childless/empty nesters who drive everywhere. Bottom line I'm not going to feel guilty about bringing a bad of chips or a box of plastic forks.

Potluck dinner indoors or potluck BBQ or pool party? If the latter, then I think the three bags of chips, dips, and case of cookies from the grocery store bakery plus the box of Capri suns and two six packs and our own bottled water was sufficient for the last pool party potluck I attended (with kids). The host provided hot dogs and burgers and a pasta salad. What else should I have brought, OP?

I am this person and I now boycott potlucks for this reason. Why would you host one if you know what people do? If you want to have a party you need to host a real one. If this is some kind of kid group event then just make a playdate with a cake or something like that.
