It's the old money versus new money societal differences.

OP was raised as a rich girl and has conservative expressions of wealth. Her coworker has new money and gushing with enthusiasm about her new monetary freedom. Old money never talks about their money, sometimes not even with their spouse. Especially not with a coworker or friend. New money is open about their wealth, they have no issues discussing money with family and friends. If I had to choose between the two for a friend, I'd pick the new money person every time.

OP doesn't sound like "old money" to me at all. She sounds like the kind of "new money" that people dislike; very conscious of social status and worried about behaving properly. "Old money" people have more confidence.

I'm from Upstate, NY and grew up poor, and I didn't finish college. I can tell OP isn't talking about me though because when I brag about something I bought it's because I spent pennies on the dollar.

18:49 you are off base. Potomac is not old money and someone who had the characteristics you were speaking of would never post something like OP did here on DCUM. Potomac is very nouveau riche.

OP is either annoyed that she is older and having to work at a "secretarial" job with someone younger who is making the same amount of money OR is from "North Potomac" i.e. Rockville and is putting on airs.

Well if she was raised in Potomac her parents were most likely rich and perhaps but not necessarily nouveau riche. But she would be a minimum of a second generation rich girl, thus making her not noveau riche.

OP's parents living in a McMansion in Potomac does not constitute her being "old money" simply because she grew up where most people do not want to live anymore.

She is working as a secretary. There is nothing wrong with that - except for the fact that she is putting her co-worker down and building herself up based on where they both grew up - which neither of them had control of and they are both working at the same job now.

If you read the link you supplied the description of Nouveau riche is a person who acquires wealth within their own generation. Potomac being one of the wealthiest areas of all the United States one can assume her parents were rich. Which would make her born into money which by definition does not make her Noveau riche. Yes, Yes, here parents could of been janitors at the local school and not rich. So we can only surmise her parents are rich by where they lived and from her post indicating knowing what real wealth is.
