Catania is on fire

DC is totally ready. For most people sexual orientation is a non-issue. Prejudice is relegated to a minority of groups. Catania was gay also when he ran for Council at large. People do not really care much.

And Bowser herself is a non-traditional figure: a forty-something pretty single woman, no hubby, no kids. In this she cannot evoke the traditional family idea and values.

At least Catania has a stable partner!

That's so she can be her own surrogate.

She communicates sooo well. She's gifted! I love when she smiles, so captivating.

However, I will vote for Catania.

I'll vote for Catania, as Bowser has the likability of a mule, but that doesn't mean Catania has the slightest chance in hell.

You would think that it would be impossible for David Catania to get more votes than Muriel Bowser, right? Totally impossible. Not imaginable. In the April 1 primary, Bowser received 42,045 votes. In 2010 when Catania ran for re-election for his At-Large seat, he received 57,163. So, look at that, the impossible has already happened. In September of 2010, in the Democratic primary, Phil Mendelson defeated a black Democrat named Michael Brown. That's also impossible because white candidates can't beat black Democrats in Washington, DC.

In fact, the Mendelson/Brown race may be the most interesting in what it says about Catania/Bowser. DC's black voters will absolutely choose a white candidate with a respectable track record over a black candidate of questionable competence.

I made a huge error here. The Michael Brown in question was white. In my defense, Michael Brown tried to confuse voters about which Michael Brown he was (earning the nickname "Whte Mike" from Tommy Wells"). But, my point stands because Mendelson defeated A. Scott Bolden -- a black Democrat -- in the 2006 primary.

Remember that Catania defeated Arrington Dixon to win his seat initially.

Arrington Dixon holds a special place in DC politics though. In 1982 he lost the council chair race to David Clarke, becoming the first black candidate in DC's history to lose a citywide race to a white candidate. When he lost to Catania he became the first straight candidate to lose to a gay candidate in DC history, and the first democrat to lose to a republican.

An impressive trio of firsts, I'd say.

I don't see Arrington Dixon in the 1998 results:

Given discussions of vote-splitting in recent elections, it's worth noting that Mendelson won a ten-way Dem primary with 17% of the vote that year.

Oops, forgot about the 1997 special election.

Uncalled for.

That might go a long way to making it a competitive mayoral race (instead of an easy victory for Bowser).

FWIW, Catania had an African American women as his "assistant" with him last night after the meeting at Powell.

Why the quotes around "assistant"?

Because she ran to the car to get a binder for him.

Trends and voting patterns go beyond our comprehension.
Let's wait for the polls.

And I see Catania signs in the same places.

As a gay person who has worked in several wards in DC, I wouldn't call being gay here a "non-issue."

Looks like Catania will be on the Kojo Nnamdi show tomorrow:

I have a work mtg then so can't tune in, but whoever does please let us know what's said.

DC is only ready for a white mayor if the over-anxious don't tell the blacks who not to vote for Mayor. That is how Marion Barry consistently wins, when whites go on record that anyone who votes for so and so is an idiot. Then the idiot voters come out in masses. So to guarantee Bowser as Mayor the whites will have to insult the idiots. Just wait and see...the live mic will be the down fall of the candidate.

I do see more Catania signs showing up, although one of them is in my own yard.
