Pet peeve - tipping at nail salon (anywhere I guess)

I hate that in American salons they dont remove it and charge you a lot for a usually crappy job. that's also why I only user uber and avoid regular taxis at all cost. I just hate the entitlement around tipping. Most workers in DC are rude and rarely say thank you, you're welcome, etc. so don't come asking for tip!

This

I agree and it is a situation that has been created by those who tip ridiculous amounts irrespective of the quality of service. We have evidence on this thread of people who just tip ludicrous amounts and view reasonable tips as being cheap.

I only include the tip on a CC - they are not going to dictate to me how they want their tip.

OP again. Pedicure in DC Columbia Heights for $25.

Owners don't like to put the tip on credit cards because hey don't want to pay taxes on an extra 20% in sales. Most merchants aren't paying per swipe/transaction anymore but if they do, they were already paying the $0.50 swipe with the service. 3% merchant fees on a $5 tip is $0.15, most people to round up anyhow when tipping on card.

I only tip a few bucks in the nail salon. I am in NOVA. I'll be honest and say that I have wondered about the nail salon business and if in fact the owner - who is generally an Asian man or some very brutish Asian woman - isn't taking a huge cut of the tips and paying very poorly and that they women are here on visas that the owner arranged at the girls are working there as a way to pay back the cost of their trip and their visa. Kind of like an indentured servitude.

Think about how tough it would be to make ends meet if you made $10/hour. Just have some compassion and tip $5-7 for a pedicure. I always give the tip directly to the person who provided the service.

Bring cash and pay the mani/pedi person DIRECTLY. Problem solved. What on earth is so difficult about this?

Do you tip the person at Walmart that bags your groceries? Do you tip the guy at McDonalds when he gives you you Big Mac? What about at whole foods when they bag your organics? What about the crossing guard? Your lady at work that cleans your toilets? They all make $10/hour.

+1

This selective compassion is just asinine. There are so many people we interact with who have a tough time making ends meet and so it is totally idiotic to focus only on certain people and on top of that to insist that a reasonable tip is not sufficient because they are not making much money.

I tip 15% on my nail services. Call me cheap or whatever. I get a $27 mani/pedi and I tip about $6.

I shop at the commissary and yes I do tip the person who bags my groceries.

For the crossing guard, I give them a thank you card at Christmas with a $20 bill in it. DC signs her name.

For the two cleaning ladies at work, one had has a grandchild a year younger than mine and the other lives in an apartment with a lot of low-income families so I give them all the gently used clothing, winter coats, toys, etc. that DC has outgrown and they are very appreciative. One of them showed me a photo of her grand child wearing DC's Lands end winter coat and told me how much they appreciated that.

I was a raised by a single mom who struggled....

You are certainly in the minority. So if your grocery bill is $100 you give the bagger $20? Nice!

+1 While I do tip the nail ladies, it's bc they do a good job. If it was crappy, I wouldn't.

Anonymous wrote:I tip 15% unless they went out of their way or did an excellent job. I had to wait 45 minutes last weekend with my feet sitting in a pedicure tub before they even started the pedicure. I tipped 10% in that instance.

WHY would you tip at all?

According to ladies up thread it's an automatic 20-25% no matter what. Ridiculous!

There is an entire thread with over 100 posts about tipping housekeeping at hotels.

http://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/372616.page

Again, there is a lot of the same mindset about these workers not making enough money - even though they make well over minimum wage - which requires others with more money to help them out by giving them tips for just doing their job.

Of course, they happily ignore that using the same rationale, there are all sorts of other categories of workers who are also not paid much and yet, there is no suggestion that we should tip them. But give it some time and these nutcases will be arguing that everyone who is making not much more than minimum wage needs to be tipped!

Oh, and if someone does not tip it means he/she is cheap!
