why are medical receptionists so rude?

Anonymous
Maybe they have a rough life and they have not other choice than taking a low paying job(low is better than nothing).
They also have to deal with crazy patients, rude patients, nice patients...they are taken for granted by their employers.
I don't think they realize how rude they can be so forgive them and be kind to them.

We try but when it's your kids health on the line it's hard to have sympathy.

How often does a kid's health actually turn out to be on the line? That's the point of these allegedly rude - and I just don't find them to be rude - staffers. They have to be gatekeepers because 9 of 10 times, there's nothing seriously wrong.

They are jerks to nurses and doctors too.

Why are pp's saying they are nasty because they are uneducated? What does being uneducated have to do with it?

Okay, despite how old this thread is, I'll jump in. I've had enough nasty experiences with medical receptionists that I admit

Okay, despite how old this thread is, I'll jump in. I've had enough nasty experiences with medical receptionists that I admit I stereotype them as being rude and passive aggressive. When I encounter a nice, competent one, I am amazed and prolific with my praise. I wish it wasn't so. I used to be in customer service, so I smile, say hello, am patient, etc.

I have the same experiences as you do, and it is rampant. not matter how great the doctor is, the support staff are usually nasty and unskilled.

Well, I am not uneducated, bitter, or angry but with your attitude, I cannot imagine that anyone would be happy to see you.

OP, the attitude of this PP is what so many of you have when dealing with what you consider to be "lower class, uneducated masses." treat everyone as you wish to be treated and you will find, to your amazement, that 99% of people are nice.

Your kid is not at death's door. Stop being ridiculous.

Some how this has not been my experience at all. I have insurance that allows me to go to any doctor I want. Plus I'm super picky and do a ton of research before I go to the doctor.

If you are in an HMO you get what you pay for.

Well if you keep having this problem, maybe it is you.
I go to doctors. Some have nice office employees, some do not. Same at the grocery, Nordstrom, Airlines.
You are a snobby piece of work.

I was a medical receptionist for a psychology practice. I was generally in a bad mood because:

A. Psychiatrists (MDs in general are arrogant assholes)
B. Patients know nothing about their insurance coverage and would scream at me because of their lack of coverage and co-pays. Take it up with your insurance company! Also read up on your policy people! Don't be stupid, read!!

Thanks for a space to rant.

Peace be with you.

When we went to Pediatric Village, the receptionists were extremely rude. It's one of the reasons, along with a long wait every time, that we quit the practice.

We quit a different Ped for this same reason (NVA). If your kid is sick, the last thing you want is attitude from some stranger behind the desk. I get it, they have some demanding parents that are nothing but PITAs. But if I am not rude, I don't expect to be treated rudely. Period.

PP here. I should add: I fully realize that the demanding parents ruined it for everyone. Which is a shame, because the doctors in that practice are fine - just not worth the aggravation of the staff and other demanding parents.
