Old School Songs (Really old, old school)

Smoke Gets in Your Eyes -- The Platters:

They asked me how I knew
My true love was true
I of course replied
Something here inside cannot be denied

They said someday you'll find
All who love are blind
When your heart's on fire
You must realize
Smoke gets in your eyes

So I chaffed them and I gaily laughed
To think they could doubt my love
Yet today my love has flown away
I am without my love

Now laughing friends deride
Tears I cannot hide
So I smile and say
When a lovely flame dies
Smoke gets in your eyes.

Smoke gets in your eyes
Smoke gets in your eyes
Smoke gets in your eyes!

The song is a lot older than the platters...

"Silly" by Denise Williams.

Any teen-age girl can relate to that song.

Anyone remembers this song 25 minutes too late? Kind of sappy but loved the lyrics

Also November rain ...

Fantastic thread. Sam Cooke's "You Send Me" was my wedding song in 1993. And I completely agree with Ben Folds's "The Luckiest." *happy sigh*

James Taylor...anything (well, maybe not "Steamroller").

Fire and Rain, James Taylor

Adele has definitely cornered the market on modern-day tear-jerkers, IMO.

If you mean the one she sang on SNL, that's a Bob Dylan song.

PP originally asked, where is the current music with these great heartfelt lyrics? From all the responses, I think the answer is--it's not there. The good old school stuff is the old school stuff.

Sad but true. I don't equate 'take off that brassiere, my dear' to be heartfelt or romantic!

First written in 1934 and sang by The Flamingos, Little Anthony and the Imperials, and Everybody Else......"I Only Have Eyes For You"

Of course there are more recent songs with great, heartfelt lyrics, e.g.:

I ONLY HAVE EYES FOR YOU

My love must be a kind of blind love
I can't see anyone but you.

Are the stars out tonight?
I don't know if it's cloudy or bright
I Only Have Eyes For You, Dear.

The moon maybe high
but I can't see a thing in the sky,
'Cause I Only Have Eyes For You.

I don't know if we're in a garden,
or on a crowded avenue.

You are here
So am I
Maybe millions of people go by,
but they all disappear from view.
And I Only Have Eyes For You.

What I like about many of the songs and lyrics posted is that they appeal to the emotional rather than being suggestive about immediate physical intimacy.

I would love for my daughter to experience the feeling of a boy holding her hand, looking at her, and saying 'I Only Have Eyes For You' and mean it rather than a line to jump in her pants.
