JKLM - How much $ do parents give?

Anonymous
With 2 kids at Mann, we donated over $6500 last year, when you add up all the other fundraisers. I consider it a bargain, since we get private school quality in our neighborhood school (and as a previous poster noted, it's a lot less than the full time nanny we used to pay for). The majority of this goes to staff: the assistant teachers who bring down student:teacher ratios to private school levels, the science teacher even for preK students, tons of PE, and performing arts. Others in my area pay $30,000 a year per student for similar things. I also know there are many in my neighborhood who can't pay the $1500 requested, and we are happy to help support those families. The PTA does a good job of making sure all they ask is participation; $10 per family. It bothers me a lot that there are people who don't pay that token amount.

I think that people who pay for privates are also paying a premium for the selective admissions/peer group. Few of the kids at Mann belong to country clubs, compete in regattas, etc. Few private school classrooms have one or two disruptive kids who consume a disproportionate share of the teacher's time.

Sitwell grad here--hahaha regattas. Lol, no. Disruptive kids in class, you bet. The more money and influence the family has, the more bullshit they tolerate from the kid, at least until upper school.

Does belonging to PG pool count as a country club membership

if you belonged to a PG pool, how could you have a kid at a DCPS or Charter?

You don't always have to live in the neighborhood to join. We attend a JKLM that has many families who belong to pools in MD such as Bannockburn, Palisades, Bethesda, Merrimack etc.

I think the more correct description would be "few private school classrooms have one or two POOR disruptive kids..."
