JKLM - How much $ do parents give?

Anonymous
Parent at both public and private.

I don't know anyone who belongs to country clubs or participates in regattas.

I was told janney is 750 by a neighbor. We aren't in the school yet but will join for K. Sounds like a lot but not really compared to the pre k tuition I am paying.

Last year at Lafayette we gave about $800 by the time everything was said and done. That figure encompasses everything from HSA dues, Bear Fund, Fundraisers to classrooms etc. We love the school, and if we can afford to do more we certainly will!

I have seen people put down $2000 for a dinner by a chef or $10 for a shirt. my relatives own an apartment in a very sought after location and we offered it at the auction, getting $1500 that went to the school.

Yeah, this is what I was thinking. $350/kid recommended at Murch, but I'm sure people give at a wide range of levels. I think the HSA raises something like $200k-$250k/year between this and the auction and a few other fundraisers.

New Murch parent here. We got an HSA letter today asking for only $15 in dues. Do they ask for the $350 at another time?

Yes, the bigger donation is part of the SOS (Support Our School) campaign, which is during October, I believe.

About $900 at Murch last year. We were not asked to give that amount. Just what we put in.

Yes. This is a big issue. It's too bad publics can't do more about it.

If private school costs 35k a year isn't paying 2k a year for a good school a pretty sweet deal? Yes, I know the JKLM doesn't have fancy facilities, small class size etc. But for a fairly comparable experience it seems like a no-brainier.

They're really not the same experiences, though. That's the fallacy in this thinking. Slick gym vs. dumpy gym is the least of it.

Also both public and private. I know people who belong to country clubs and participate in regattas. But they're public school parents!

The primary reason was access to a curriculum much more in line with our (academic) values and goals in educating the kids. If anything, flashy private school facilities are a turn off, not an asset. I'd rather not say the current school, but want to say we didn't hate the DCPS elementary. There was a lot to like there which is why we gave it a shot and willingly paid hundreds of $ into PTA, auction, etc.

(Yes, I realize it's 4 am and no I'm not a troll. Damn wine sulfites)

see the bright side. you are the parent of an older child and can do it (talking about the wine sulfites.....). I am the parent of much younger kids (pre-k and 3rd grade), so no wine for us on Saturday night most of the time, in bed at 9.30pm and we are up at 6.30 am even on Sunday

PP which JKLM did you leave?

Not necessarily. Not everyone can afford to pay, and of those that pay not everyone can afford the suggested amount. That's part of why the suggested amount is so high - it helps support those who can't pay. It's public school, deal with it.

Janney. I'm the wine sulfites mom, not sure if you meant me. ?
I just clicked on this thread out of curiousity to see what the recommended contribution was now. Did not mean to derail, sorry!

Not part of the country club set, but don't see anything inherently wrong with it.
