I grew up with poodles and they were not high energy - they were personable, wickedly smart and happy.
I think that something has happened to the breed. It seems that poodles are only used for breeding these days. Are they all locked away and unsocialized as breeding dogs only? That's a shame.

We have a sproodle, and he is an extremely sweet dog. He's still young, and has energy, but a trip to the dog park every other day and quick walks keep him very mellow. I grew up with standard poodles and they were not "high energy" dogs. Very calm, in fact.
