where to look for $400K in MoCo?

Yep. That's our plan. I'm just trying to get a better sense of our options to be able to better plan our finances now.

We just moved to Capitol View in SS (borders Kensington) and like the neighborhood a lot. From the house below, it's just over a mile to either the Forest Glen stop or the Kensington Marc train, or easy bus ride to downtown SS.

Here's a 400K option:

Welcome to the neighborhood! We're off Capitol View too.

Are you going to tell folks about the train noise in cap view?

Well we just hear the horn blowing at the Kensington station, kind of far-off. We're up the hill from Capitol View, not on it.

Ha, cute.

But seriously, people who believe there are no homes out there for 400k are the people who think no one lives east of Chevy Chase.

This is the truth.

We live "out there" by choice on 2 acres. Each day, my kids come home from school and run around outside. And with the economy the way it is, we paid about $200,000 less. The appraisal, however, came in at about $150K more than the selling price. So we got a great deal.

You have to look. You have to be able to factor in commute. (Mine doubled, but I didn't have a bad commute even when were were "closer in.") And you have to accept the fact that the amenities will be different.

I have no regrets.
