ear piercing

They considered it a custom of the poor or of immigrants (can be mutually exclusive) and look upon the practice with distaste (true WASPs). One could egneralize the beilief as "a smocked dress makes a baby girl pretty not the infliction of holes in her ears." I have never seen a WASP baby with pierced ears and those of a "certain generation" would not have even pierced their ears as grown-ups (for obvious reasons). When I was 16, and my mother 46, I talked her into piercing her own ears and mine. My grandmother was aghast and said, "if God had wanted holes in your ears, he would have put them there." This is the waspy truth, harsh though it may be. If you are a WASP and your baby has pierced ears, I guarantee that other WASP moms have noted it and comment on it behind your back. You probably don't care, and good for you, but don't kid yourself, they are talking.

One of the S FL pp's here - I'm so damn GLAD that I'm not a true WASP then!! What a SAD, SAD life it must be that piercing your DD's ears would cause ALL OF THE OTHER WASP moms to talk behind my back! What shallow, shallow people you must be! I can tell you that MY friends are not talking about my DC's earrings because we have MORE class than that.

Wow, I thought WASPs were harsh on my people, but WASP on WASP violence was totally unexpected. Well, it's nice to have the disapproving eyes pointed elsewhere.

I was held down crying as a 2 year old to get my ears pierced, and I think the posts here are a shrill overreaction. It was not "cruel and unusual" to quote one of the posts. Nor, is it "mutiliation" as said by another. I don't remember the incident -- I only know because of stories and pictures. Also, my ears were never infected, etc. because my mother took care of them properly.

Oh, and I am glad to have my ears pierced.

. . . . possibly, if you live in Africa.

....... and don't use protection.

Good point. But, you know, it's just a lot easier to whack off that nasty foreskin. Really, who wants to be bothered by teaching hygiene and sexual restraint and all that stuff?
Sorry, OP, we are hijacking your thread. I just LMAO at these people who are citing the African studies as reasons to circumcise their American babies. I guess they are completely unaware that in this county most AIDS cases have occurred among men who have sex with men and who, in my experience, were more likely to be circumcised than not (according to self-report, not something I actually saw, mind you).

Yes, because they are mutually exclusive. You either "whack" off foreskin and let your son fend or himself or you have frank and important conversations. What a load of sanctimonious horsesh*t.

Wow, is Frank and Important conversations the way you prevent STD's? Why didn't I think of that. Guess I'll pass on that Gardasil.

Wow. Is there anything you WASPs are allowed to do other than make money and look down on others? Must be a sad, rich, existence.

By the way, it's not the dress that makes the baby beautiful, either. Many well-educated upper class whites (usually WASPs) make that mistake over and over again.

Anonymous wrote:Three is a terrible age to get ears pierced. Honestly, anything after about 6 months until at least 6 ot 7 are probably terrible ages. I, personally, do not like seeing infants with their ears pierced. HOWEVER, when you see infants, (1) the piercing is more than likely done by a pediatrician; and (2) they are too little to find their ears and mess with the earrings. By the time they are old enough, they are just used to the earrings and it's practically a body part. But in between those ages, the kids are going to play with them, and they will probably get infected, fall out, or whatever. Plus, as the OP noted, the child is old enough to be petrified of the procedure.

I got mine pierced when I was 7, and even at that age, I was so afraid that they would fall out, I tightened them so much that the earring went inside my earlobe and I had to have it removed.

My mom asked me if I wanted to get my ears piereced when I was 4. I clearly remember saying yes, then no, then yes again. I wanted it done but I was scared. I ultimately decided yes and don't have any regrets. My mom reminded me every day for a while to clean them with alcohol and all was fine. I plan to do the same for my daughter when she reaches the point where she can make a decision about it.

I don't think the conversations themselves stop the spread. I would hazard a guess that stressing the importance of using protection is what really does it.

Why do women want to decorate their infants and toddlers?

Some white upper (middle) class women are not WASPs. I'm white and upper class and jewish and we happily pierced our daughter's ears, as my mom pierced mine And since I never even realized this was as issue of class, we clearly dont look down on other jews for doing it. We have bigger issues to worry about.

So OP, I guess you are equally disgusted at what some women do to their screaming newborn male infants (ie, chopping off part of the penis)?
