(AAP) All About Prepping?

My DC got in without prep, but I won't hate on those who felt that their kids needed some prep. After all, I'm going to have to deal with you and your kids for the next 6 years at least. The lesson here for all of us is that sometimes working hard (or prepping) takes you farther than just being smart. And to all you preppers, give your kid a break. Don't cause them to end up in the nut house. If they're not into it, stop pushing them so hard and let them just be kids.

Standardized tests like SAT? I guess being smart and motivated to work hard is the best.

I know two kids who are going trough psychiatric treatment right now thanks to their "mother". I hope these two kids get better and able to get on with their lives. It is OK to prep your kid and push them to be better as long as it is not extreme. Let the kid be kid, and enjoy life.

So.. how much prepp have you done?

I know my kids are smart. I gave them minimal prepping just to make sure.
I Had them do sample test a couple of times to get familiarize with the types of tests.
They are all in AAP now.

I wouldn't have my kids 'drilling' for admission to AAP though.
I don't know.. if my kids were like borderline ones, then maybe I would have done little more..
I'm just glad my kids are smart ones.

Why does it bother you what other kids are doing if your kids are smart and in AAP? Why are you wasting your time sneaking around to see what other parents and kids are doing?

Yeah, and I know tons of kids that spend their days on TV, video games and playing who are on anti-psychotic and anti-neurotic medications. Some of these kids for therapy are getting structure and how to "prep" in their lives!

What does this baloney mean (my kid got in without prep) or do you live in an inner city ghetto?

You sound that AAP is a great badge of honor --- isn't this a fait accompli for the average muckracker.

Whoopi. You and your kid get a Noble Prize for getting in without prep. Yawn, let's all go back to sleep another mom beating her breast again...over nothing.

It doesn't bother me. Did I say that? Just sharing some info and getting some info. Isn't that what the forum is for?
If some parents do something wrong with their kids (over prep, under prep, whatever), I'm careless.. Not my kids.
Just trying to do best for my kids.

Leave it to you, PP to turn a well-meaning comment into something nasty and borderline racist. If that mom cared so much about the test, she would have been prepping his kid like you. So relax yourself.

You sound very dumb. Where do you get borderline racist from (as opposed to over or under the board)? Define borderline racist?

Too many moms chirping about their no prepping kid getting into AAP. So what? What's the big deal here? Will the kid therefore get paid or go to Harvard?

We tried to prep a little, but our DD was not very interested. She did a few of the matrix reasoning games for fun, but not to the level that I think would be considered prep. I think it did help that we verbally explained how to handle a standarized test (e.g., make your best guess and don't leave any questions blank). It'd be a shame if a kid really had strong thinking to apply to the questions but wasn't clear whether it was okay to select an answer if he or she wasn't 100% certain. In that respect I'd hope the teachers make the instructions very clear to point where all the children understand, but I'm not sure they do.

LOL, I will start prepping/push my infant son so he can get into Best Psychiatry Schools in the USA. I am sure by the time he finish school, he'll have enough patients to care.

Does anyone out there think that a lack of pure "giftedness" can be overcome through hard work? For example, my DC will be in 2nd grade this year. Our DC is extremely hard working and bright, but previous WISC testing reveals that DC is not in the "gifted" range. DC will take CoGat this fall. We would like our DC to have AAP opportunity, and we ARE willing to prep DC so no doors are closed to her in the FCPS system.

My husband and I are not geniuses, but we both have succeeded academically and have very good advanced degrees. We have both worked extremely hard to get good grades and good jobs. Can a child who is not deemed outright "gifted" through success on one of these tests succeed in AAP? Can hard work compensate for any innate IQ deficiencies?

Just because a kid gets into AAP does not mean that the result will be academic success. So if you want academic success for your child, AAP is NOT necessarily the route there.

What are WISC scores?
