Why is Halloween Forbidden in Fairfax County Schools?

Anonymous
Someone dredged up a 5-year-old thread that provides incorrect information and people are having knee-jerk and hand-wringing reactions.

Gotta love DCUM

Same at our school in MOCO

Which is totally hypocritical since we still "happen" to close for other Christian holidays.

I'm not Christian but I think it's silly. My kids enjoy all the commercial aspects of Christian holidays, fine with me if school has parties around them too.

Oh, Lord. Yes, it's "considered" Christian because it is a religious holiday. All Saint's Eve on 10/31 followed by All Saints Day on 11/1, which is a Holy Day of Obligation in the Catholic Church.

not born and raised here and am curious.

I went to school in the 70's, and we did Halloween crafts and things like that, but didn't usually wear costumes to school. I do remember some years having a costume parade or something, but not every year.

Oh, Lord, no it is not Christian. Those holidays were invented by the Catholic church to appropriate non-Christian celebrations that were already happening. Halloween as we know it is an ancient tradition that has and does exist in many forms throughout the world, even at different times of year in different places. It has nothing to do with Christianity. Just please find me where the bible or any Christian document anywhere mentions dressing up in costumes and going to door to door. You can't.

It's logistically a pain.

MCPS has limited the celebrations, but I'd be fine if they just got rid it for the school day.

Halloween is not Christian, lol. The strict/more conservative Christians, Jews, and Muslims tend to avoid it.

Dates to the 4th century in the Church. But hey, if you hate Catholics you'll find any way to write it off. Common DCUM Catholic-hater above.

Must I go on?

We do Halloween trick or treating, but I don't want my kids going to school in costume.

FCPS didn't have anything in schools my kids went to years ago. Coming from another district with a parade/party/concert it was a surprise.

The reason when I asked? Many on a bus and would have to change but most important reason was too many parents object to Halloween - not part of their culture etc. Thanksgiving feast was also a point of contention along with Valentine's Day.

Exactly. It's not county-wide. We have a jack o'lantern in the front office with a "Happy Halloween" message.

I taught elementary school in schools that allowed costumes as well as one that didn't. With little kids it is a completely wasted day if they dress up.

Liberals - they don't want anyone offended or left out.

Rolling Valley's haunted house is pretty cool. It's Oct. 29 this year.
