Full-day Kindergarten in Fairfax County

I think the coalition for FDK is fairly optimistic, though we shall see.

My uninformed impression is that the School Board is under some pressure to make it happen, given the guidance from the Board of Supervisors and now Superintendent Dale's proposal. The School Board might not want to actually do what it takes, but I think it is feeling the pressure.

I will be interested to see what is said at our half-day kindergarten orientation on May 16. And I will be at the May 17 hearing with my kids.

No. The public hearing on the FY 2012 budget was last night. The Budget work session is tomorrow (5/19) night (7-9 p.m.) and the School Board will adopt the Budget the following Thursday (5/26).

Tomorrow night's work session (televised and streamed on the web) should give a sense where the School Board members are as to supporting Full Day K implementation in one year or not.

Full-Day K All Set, But What About More $ For Teachers?

. . .

Member Patricia Reed (Providence) said she heard no big surprises during the hearing and expects to see full-day kindergarten implemented for the 2011-12 school year without a problem because most of her colleagues are committed to it.

"People in the community are generally supportive of the decision to put compensation increases at 1 percent," Reed said. "Just in the 11th hour I want to make sure I ask 'Can anybody find any more money for the employees?'"

I think the speakers on the issue were quite compelling...and definitely cemented for me that my daughter absolutely needs to be in a full-day program. She needs the extra time in the classroom that a half-day program will not provide.

Crossing my fingers and everything else that can be crossed that the school board members agree.

They should just give the teachers a 2 percent raise and bonus this year and scrap the fdk implementation. It's stupid to expand programs when the teachers have been pretty good about not pushing for raises in down economic times.

I think the community pressure is way too high at this point for FDK to be scrapped. But where I think the real mistake was made was at the board of supervisors level - they needed to keep the tax rate where it was and at least give a LITTLE more to the schools. I get that lowering the tax rate was good for political points, but I think they are hobbling the schools for a .02% tax decrease for homeowners.

you clearly do not get it, do you?

FCPS has implemented several NEW programs since FDK was promised over three years ago. Addtionally, FDK is not a "program", it's a GRADE level. Programs are art, music, free/reduced lunches, physical education, sports, etc.

Fully agree with this.

After attending our kindergarten orientation (at one of the final 20 schools on the list for FDK) I am more certain than ever that FDK (if it is implemented) will be a great thing. The school is doing all sorts of wonderful stuff with the kindergartners, and I think kindergarten will be so much more pleasurable for the students and the teachers if the kids have time to breathe, ask questions, stretch their legs, etc.

I know they haven't had their final vote, but this work session is making it sound like this is a done deal. Who is throwing a party?
