This is the first time I've ever noticed a fishy taste in Horizon's milk, and I've been drinking it for almost 2 years now. What's going on with it?
This is a horrible milk. I was about to throw away my coffee maker because the DHA milk I put in my coffee but right when my child came in eating cereal with DHA milk in it, she said, "Did you put milk in your coffee, because this milk tastes like fish." I said "OMG. That was the problem. I am so dumb."
Bought 3 pk of HorizonOrganic's 2% Omega3/DHA from Sams. Fishy smell & taste, it gets worse on warnming. Not good....
I thought this was a new thing because my daughter complained about her milk tasting funny with a new carton we bought, but it looks like this has been going of for years based on this thread. We noticed that the milk tasted fine if it was plain and cold, but we add Carnation instant breakfast to my daughter's morning milk and when we did that, the milk tasted awful. It was really quite strange. Must be the reaction of the milk with the mix, but no more Horizon DHA added milk for us. The gross taste lingers - I couldn't get rid of it for a couple of hours despite brushing my teeth and drinking something else!

I noticed the fish taste too when I used my toddlers Horizon DHA milk last night for cereal. I though it might be residue from the bowl I was using but when I was filling my toddler's cup with milk I could smell it and I tasted it again.
I saw a few other comments on their Facebook page but it seems like Horizon is trying to keep it secret and not admitting any problems publicly. They are telling people to private message them instead of saying what is going on. I called their customer service number to complain and find out the story. Tory said that what is happening in the algal they use for DHA is "oxidizing". To me that sounds like it's spoiling but she would not say those words. She say the milk is fine to drink aside from the smell and taste. I personally do not think everything is going to be OK with this milk. It was obvious she was choosing her words carefully and could only say certain things. When I pressed for more information she had nothing to offer. She also said that since it's not harmful (as far as they know) that they do not have to recall it from the store shelves. (which they are not doing) I urge everyone to call them can complain. They will also give you a refund. Also, comment on their Facebook page and try and get this out in the open. | Here's another dilemma. I bought the Horizon Omega whole milk and while if you drink it cold it tastes normal I noticed heating up brings out the fishy taste. Here's my question though. I made strawberry milk for my son like I usually do adding sugar and nesquick strawberry powder and after a few sips it tasted extremely fishy almost like a metallic taste. I'm talking nasty here. We experimented making small batches even using different cups to drink it in and after a few sips the fishy taste would come out. I know there was a poster on this board that is a Biology major. Any idea if maybe an ingredient in the strawberry quik or sugar causing a chemical reaction? I just made some strawberry milk with another organic whole milk no omega oil and it tasted normal. |
Very true. . Fish smell is too strong in the milk. My son has been refusing to drink for the past few days due to this that we just realized. We stopped using horizon organic today.
Have been using Horizon DHA for quite some time with no issues until this most recent 1/2 gallon which made me search. Fish-milk = nasty. Won't be purchasing the enhanced version of Horizon again.
I made cappuccinos this morning with the Horizon Whole Milk w/ DHA Omega-3. It frothed up nice and creamy with a beautiful micro-foam. My wife and I each smiled, took a sip and looked questioningly at each other. I questioningly said, “Fish?”. She agreed. YUK! Fish in my cappuccino?! She added a spoon of raw sugar and it began to bubble up like a bad chemical reaction. Any idea what that’s all about? Pretty scary stuff. I’ll be returning it. Have written to Horizon about it. But, I complained about this over 6 months ago and thought something would have changed by now. NOT.

We had the exact same problem with dha horizon organic milk from SAMs from August to sept 2014 as well. Just bought some more (by mistake) and it's no longer fishy! The box says something advertising omega3 from plants rather than fish oil - not sure if this is new, but I don't recall it from before.
Maybe they heard us and changed their ingredients? Hadn't seen it posted anywhere else, but just thought id add to the collective internet wisdom |
Been drinking Horizons for years! Never had a problem until my last 2 purchases. I buy 3 pack from SAMs club...at least one of the 3 half gallons tastes fishy. Horizons needs to change this or lose a loyal customer. So disappointed...I have recommended this organic brand of milk to friends for years!

I just heated up a cup of milk and noticed it tasted like fish. Yuck! So I asked the Google and found this page. Horizon's DHA. Package says 100% vegetarian, but it does taste like fish when warmed. Cold, it's fine.
