That's Kristof saying the quiet part out loud: equivalency in order to minimize Israeli trauma and excuse Hamas' terrorism. There should absolutely be accountability in Israel's prison system, but the abuses parallel issues in the US prison system and most other prison systems around the world; it's a systemic human problem that we all need to do better to address. I hope Bibi and his far-right ministers are voted out in the next election and that some real reforms are implemented in Israel.

You might not like him (I know I don’t like ours), but Israel is a democracy with a Knesset of which 20% are Arab Israelis. Hamas, on the other hand, was democratically elected in 2007 on a plain mandate of the destruction of Israel. They proceeded to murder their political opponents of the Palestinian Authority and have held uncontested power for 20 years.

You don't get to have different rules for different people, especially when it comes to becoming a voting citizen, and get to call yourself a "democracy."

English must be your second language. A tyrannical regime does not need to be headed by an unelected dictator. The concept that a democratically-elected Prime Minister of a coalition government is somehow inherently moral or not tyrannical does not follow.

Temple Israel in Detroit wasn't selling real estate in the West Bank. They were educating Jewish preschoolers. The Jewish preschools my kids went to also have armed security and neither of the institutions they were housed at have ever hosted an Israeli real estate event. The truth is that Jewish institutions need security because of antisemitism. It's a real problem that is being masked by anti-Israel "human rights" rhetoric when, really, it's just the same old Jew-hatred.
