| So many people are dying before 65 that retirement at SS is a prize. |
No need for partisan politics on this issue... Biden and Pelosi were way too old and should have retired years earlier too. There should just be an age cut-off no matter what side of the isle you support. |
And Boxer and Feinstein in California stayed in office way too long. Feinstein especially. Have to love the new ad in Ohio about Sherrod Brown. It struck a chord. It may be the most brilliant and devastating political ad in a long time because it's not offensive nor even political. I will acknowledge that people are living a lot longer and it's hard to tell driven people who are still active and fit to retire. |
Exactly this. Most people will depend heavily on Social Security which will drive their retirement date. Those of us in this forum are more likely to have been heavy savers and are not planning to depend on Social Security at all. Sadly, we are also anxious savers so I am willing to bet that even people with many millions saved here won't retire until after 65. My dad was in that bucket. Millions saved and died still working for the Federal Government. I learned from his experience and intend to retire at 59.5. I encourage others to do the same if they want to. Many people (especially in DC) have a lot of their identity tied up in their jobs and just can't make it work. |
I'm so happy I didn't have to be the one to post this as I have many times before. |
$1800 is spreading it out! I'm sure most take more than that. My dad had a kidney surgery for 95k. Knees and hips are pricey too. |
| We've always gotten our health insurance through DH as I'm a contractor, so he's the one who needs to stay employed until 65. My income pales next to his, so I will probably step away from the workforce at 60 and take on all of the extra work that will make our family life easier. |

Lots of people are poor, so they work longer. I’m 50 and many of our friends are talking
About retirement in the next 5-8 years as kids go to college. |
Actually, premature mortaility (death before 65) happens to only 10-15% of Americans. The U.S survival rate is actully quite high. Americans have a 75-80% chance of living to age 70. |
The Rich, Broke or Dead calculator is fun to play with - it gives you a visualization that looks at the question of whether your retirement savings can last long enough to support your retirement spending and combines it with average US life expectancy values to get a fuller picture of the likelihood of running out of money before you die. https://engaging-data.com/will-money-last-retire-early/ |
then you have even more reason to work till 67 if worried about dying young. While working you have employee provided health insurance, short term disability, long term disability, company paid life insurance. Then COBRA. I have worked with a few people who died while working. Guy had a heart attack in our office and widow got 4x his income plus cobra for 18 months. Plus we had a small death benefit of 5k to help with funeral and widow could jump on our COBRA right away. We even kept her on employee rate for 18 months to be nice. If the dude had retired even the day before she would have been in trouble. |
Yes it is ridiculous! That is why we need universal healthcare and need to get insurance companies out of it! I should not have to pay $1200+ per person for healthcare at age 65+, for crappy insurance I have paid well over $500k into Medicare. |
Two totally different things! One is a human right. The other is a choice. And yes those who have more accidents statistically should pay more in car insurance. Just like if you own a home in hurricane prone florida and more if it's on the beach. Thats how regular insurance works. But health insurance is for the good of all. And you don't get to choose your gene pool |
That is nuts in the world we live in today. For many, not all, 75 is what 65 or even early 60s was 40 or 50 years ago. People in their 20s today will likely push that further to 80 and beyond. PP who keeps saying SS was only supposed to be for a short time reflects what life was like when SS was adopted. Living well and well into 80s is the norm for many. |
Yes you should pay that. That is what it costs or it actually costs more. |
