If this is what is it, absolutely not signing up. |
| If that is the case, and people won't sign up because it's EdTech, it would be great to write about your concerns and refusal and cc the principal of your school and whoever else up top that's making the decisions to spend the money on these tech programs. They need to start hearing from parents en masse. |
| I actually have experience via a summer camp with the Quest program at the link. I have no idea if that’s what DCPS is doing or if the name similarity is merely a coincidence, BUT that program was gamified math but NOT delivered via screens. It was set up more like some giant escape room if that makes sense. |
| Looking at the list of schools that feed to the program my kid would attend, I’m skeptical they’ll have enough kids if the standards are actually high. Lots of the schools report 0-2 5s on CAPE and that’s a much lower standard. Maybe they could make a real cohort if every qualified kid attended, but at 20-25% uptake max? They’ll have like 5 kids? |
my question is WHY does it even need to be gamified for high achieving kids? These are kids that like math, are good at math, and get math. There's no need for gamification at all. Now - if this is like "puzzle" competition math that's different, where you use logical thinking to get to a solution. But it's not chasing points and creating characters. |
| All the kids in my dc’s jklm class who got the invitation are already in RSM or similar. I’m curious if they will go or have a good experience. I’m guessing none that I know will attend, but would consider a no-tech 2-week version |
| Did anyone get the follow up message and was actually able to open the overview & FAQ? I got an access required message. |
yup, you need to enter the email address it was sent to. |
I wasn't able to access with the email it was sent to. It asked for my child's student ID and password which I entered, but still not the access required message. We're not going anyway but I'm curious. |
maybe because you're signed into another microsoft account? not sure. |
|
The email came: a weekly theme, Beast Academy, hands-on STEM projects, and a weekly field trip to a museum or elsewhere to support the theme.
It actually sounds wonderful. I may cancel some of our camps and do this instead. |
| And access was fine. Clicked the link, used the same email address, they emailed me a code, I input the code and got in. |
Agreed! it sounds...fantastic. My kid would love all of this. Unfortunately it came too late and we already paid for camp. We will see if we can join for partial weeks, i see that they will prioritize full attendance. |
Theres no way we can do all 6 weeks, but I'm going to sign my son up anyways. As we think it through, we may actually cancel other camps (eating a couple deposits) and end up there for maybe 4 weeks. |
I am also pleasantly surprised, but I think they have mistaken the number of qualifying kids who don't have summer plans locked in way before this. I also personally think 6 weeks is too much given that it doesn't seem to involve any physical activity. |
