Can one decline herpes testing?

Anonymous
My mom got herpes from a boyfriend when I was a kid. He had refused to get tested too.

Why if there is nothing to do about it? If she’s never going to have unprotected sex of course.

Lady, you sound as naive as your daughter.

There are many reasons to know if you have been exposed to genital herpes. For example, it can impact your delivery options and cancer risk.

Just let the doctor do their job!

Make it make sense!!!

Because of the emotional and mental stigma and a teen trying to navigate that.

Again, you are treating her like a child…but if she is sexually active that ship has sailed.

She can’t have it both ways.

THIS!!!

GYN

A sexually active colleges student isn’t still seen by a pediatrician! 🙄

Ignorance is a bliss according to OP.

Thanks for the replies - I didn’t know people even treat herpes but good to know for future. This one sounds like something else, but will keep an eye. More concerned it was staph boil vs herpes but who knows.

You are a super irresponsible parent and you are teaching your daughter to be just as irresponsible. Shame on you.

You should be teaching her to deal with whatever the problem is in front of her instead of sticking her head in the sand and possibly affecting other partners.

What? It popped and is getting smaller. If it doesn’t resolve I’m having her go, but meant it seems to improving from yesterday. I called Dr and they said give it 5-7 days and track size.

Do you even know ANYTHING about herpes? The blister pops if you squeeze it and it goes away after a few days. That is by no means an indication that it is NOT herpes.

I have no idea if that's what it is. Which is exactly why you should advise your ADULT daughter that she needs to get tested instead of doing whatever irresponsbile assenine thing you're doing.

The “assanine” thing is what her ped said to do and that she can go there or to GYN. She said give it a few days to see if it resolves. She said they wouldn’t run any test at this stage anyways and to use a warm compress in the meantime. She said since it’s painless that was her rec.

Are you the OP? You asked if you could decline testing, right? Are you changing your story now?

Yes I called doctor this am once I saw replies. She said give it 5-7 days to see how it resolves. And then can come in there or GYN. She said std testing would be premature and could also be false neg. They do a standard panel and would also check for staph

Why are YOU calling a pediatrician to discuss this for a 19 year old?? It's time for her to take care of her own medical needs.

She can decline any tests she wants to decline. But you cannot decline for her.

You can easily get herpes anywhere in the groin area - and mouth and anywhere else even if the male uses a condom. All it takes is skin to skin contact.

A) herpes can be spread even if someone is wearing a condom. B) herpes can cause health complications in certain situations. C) let's get real the anxiety of not knowing will drive her totally nuts.

Absolutely true. And while HSV-1 usually causes oral herpes, and HSV-2 usually causes genital herpes — it's totally possible for both types of herpes simplex to infect either area.. For example, you can get HSV-1 on your genitals if someone with a cold sore on their lips gives you oral sex. Herpes can be anywhere outside of the condom area - you just need skin to skin contact.

Even if not herpes she should get a potential staph infection looked at! Trying to imagine what mom would try to discourage her kid from getting a skin infection in a potentially serious place from getting looked at by a doctor.
