That’s not really the right use of that phrase. It refers to a hardship that a naive person is unaware of. It does not refer to something being better than expected.
No, it's the correct usage. It means someone who is naive or has never experienced hardship. OP has apparently never taken a bus. It's a hardship because it's not particularly comfortable or luxurious, but she is not in danger of being shanghaied by drug dealers.
