It’s not the only thing available, but it’s the thing that most kids that major in IR want. Working for a multinational in another country is cool, but you don’t need to do IR to get there. Frankly, if that’s your goal you would probably be better off studying something else. And even more so if you just want to end up at Deloitte or the like. |

DS is American with 3 passports….speaks 3 languages and graduated with an IR degree from a Scottish uni. He ended up meeting the MD of a niche/elite wealth mgmt group during a trip to a Mediterranean spot by accident….He was arguing with his friend about the English School/Realism/Liberalism and this guy got in the conversation…
His ability to communicate with the MD who had a huge interest in IR brought them close together. He eventually gave him the opportunity to interview for a position out of UNI…It has been 3 years now and he is a very successful member of their international wealth mgmt team handling extremely wealthy clients all over the world…….Never thought in a million years he would be doing what he does…. |
| My kid is majoring in IR and is talking about getting an MBA eventually. Good, bad, ugly? Comments? |

| For what it’s worth, DC is a top student and an IR major at one of the top ranked programs in the country. Dc has recently had several informational interviews with people in the field. All have said there are no entry level jobs (or hardly any jobs) available at the moment. DC is now adding another major. |
| I graduated from JHU with a BA in International Relations in the early 2000s. Got my masters at GWU for Public Policy and worked for think tanks and non profits. |

I would make a plug for U of Toronto since their Munk school (IR) is excellent and has been for years, as is their econ dept.
Last year, U of T was in the news for picking up IR profs from US colleges (Yale, USC, etc.). "America's Trump-fueled Brain Drain Benefits Canada": https://www.nytimes.com/2025/06/28/world/canada/trump-universities-professors-toronto.html |
Ok, but see contemporary experience immediately above |
yes Munk at U of T is top tier globally. also Canada is poised to recruit a lot of top US brain drain talent thanks to Trump's chaos. https://www.forbes.com/sites/michaeltnietzel/2025/12/11/the-big-poach-canada-to-spend-12-billion-to-recruit-top-researchers/ https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/fedbudget-highered-talent-recruitment-9.6976821 https://ontherecordnews.ca/u-of-t-welcomes-3-u-s-scholars-amid-canadas-push-to-expand-its-academic-reach/ |
Are they still taking applications for this year or is it too late? |
I think so. Jan 15 was the deadline online. But you could reach out to admissions and see if they'll still take them. FYI it's an easy application. No essays except for the smaller residential colleges that is your "home within home" within the larger UofT campus. Also, St. George is the most in demand campus downtown rather than the 2 suburban ones. |
According to this thread here: https://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/1310586.page GW. |

This thread (not the one about Vanves expecting a kid)

The thread discussed poli sci at GW but also that Elliott for IR is better plugged in to DC |

Check out UofT or UBC ... Canada would be an outstanding place to study IR in light of how Trump's lack of leadership globally.
Here's PM Mark Carney's riveting speech today from Davos. He got a standing ovation and captured global attention, possibly a speech for IR classes to study for the future: https://foreignpolicy.com/2026/01/21/mark-carney-speech-davos-trump-canada-full-text-transcript-read/ |
