My son lives in a Muslim country and his wife has taken great pride in managing to do "christmas" for him for the last 2 years

He has been working across countries overseas in Europe, Africa, Eastern Europe for the past 6 months to last 2 weeks and she was so proud showing me their tree via insta

And all I want to say is omg you can't do tinsel on trees when you have cats

Also you can't actually light a fire in a fireplace where you've just hung stockings

And I feel like I'm just going to be a MIL

I like that you can go to a live midnight mass anywhere tonight online

Stay home, nap, stream shows and movies, eat good food (whatever it is to you).

Personally I would go for a nice long walk and listen to music or a mystery audio book.

Then I would have a little at home spa day. Long bath with fancy bath products, diy mani pedi, face and hair mask.

For dinner I would make a delicious charcuterie board with my favorite little snacks. Baguette, nice cheese, cornichon pickles, smoked salmon maybe a tasty little salad. I would eat said snack while watching ridiculous hallmark Christmas movies.

Last, I’d cuddle up in bed with freshly washed sheets and listen to above referenced mystery audio book until I fell asleep.

Christmas Day I’d do some Pilates, clean or tidy a bit, do some painting. Probably finish my audio book. Then takeout and a movie.

Merry Christmas, OP. Whatever you are doing, I hope you look back on the day and find something you feel good about. Thinking of you.

Your instinct re being one of “those” MILs are correct “if all you want to say” is critical. Hope you managed to keep your corrections to yourself; sounds like you have a great DIL who really loves your son.

You did it, OP. Whatever this holiday was, it is basically done by now. Take a deep breath, then a nice slow exhale. Here you are, on the other side. Way to go.

Have you thought of perhaps volunteering your time/services to those less fortunate??

Maybe serving a hot Christmas dinner to a homeless person or family.
