Did he apply ED/EA? Have AP classes in all 5 CORE subjects?

NP. That isn't the question. PP was responding to the generalization that 3.9 and 1550s are all but guaranteed acceptance.

At ours, it is senior year GPA, so typically higher than GPA at the time of application.

This is where the uncertainty happens at our private. Since APs are limited, senior year is when most kids take APs and get the biggest bump in their GPA between end of year junior year and the GPA showed on SCOIR (graduation GPA). It is hard to predict the end of year GPA!

At our oos private, UVA are more stats driven than holistic.

You're acting like high stats kids have nothing else going on and don't present strong applications.\

I mean, the acceptances are literally in weighted gpa order. Yes, the kids have good ecs as well but it shouldn’t surprise people that uva, like most flagships, is more by the numbers than anything else. At least for oos admissions which outnumber instate apps by tens of thousands of apps.

Same here, There is a GPA line each year (and for what it's worth it's really high--Ivy level).

Pp, definitely lower than Ivy level at our private, more like A- and up, which is maybe top third class.

It is offered to anyone waitlisted. Check the Notes from Peabody blog for number on waitlist each year. Only 100 slots for Wise though. Not sure if they fill it each year or not.

It’s BS unless you come from a rural or underprivileged area, then they take that into account. So if your school offered one AP and you took it, you “maxed out” and you’re UVA material.

They are not holistic in other ways.

Is there ever an instance where a 3.5 kid can get in coming from Sidwell or NCS (no APs)?

Recruited athlete or donate a library.

Of course Dean J says its 'holistic'. Makes her job look important.

But in reality they have too many applications to sort through.

At TJ ( I am looking at Naviance as I type this) not a SINGLE applicant was declined if they had GPA over 4.47

and

not a SINGLE application got accepted if the GPA was below 4.32

Clearly they are based of GPA. The Naviance chart looks like those weather forecasts...with a clear 'front' of accepts, behind which are declines..

It was a rough year for TJ students last year who wanted UVA…..lots waitlisted.

That’s because TJ dumbed down admissions- well known fact. Same at Virginia Tech.
