Teacher out for an emergency family issue- grades?

Schools often will not do it. We've asked and were refused and my child's grades suffered because of it.

With literally any other teacher that would be my impulse. I am Team Teacher all the way in most cases. This teacher is a HORRIBLE grader though- so slow. The assignment that isn’t graded yet is from early, early September. The kids have to hound her to please grade.

She might not have graded since September because her child has cancer or similar. Give the poor woman some grace.

Thank you. When my child was hospitalized multiple times one year unexpectantly my department head took over my grading and not one parent complained. And they had no idea why I was gone. I think this parent should relax.

This happens far more than parents realize. The Science RT at my school was grading for two other teachers last year.

Depending on the amount of outstanding grading and the expected timing for the teacher’s return, the school might issue incompletes for the grade, and then the teacher will catch up when they return and submit grade corrections.

Retakes should go. That being said, some teachers clearly expect most students to fail on the first round and do retakes. Getting rid of them in the first place should fix this though (and make it easier for teachers to grade.)

OP here with an update. Teacher is still out and I do feel bad for whatever must be happening with her/her family. The outstanding work never got graded but someone (admin?) was extreeeeeemely lenient about quarter grades. Which was nice, I guess. I hope she comes back- my son had a long term sub for most of a year and that was rough.

I also hope she comes back. That would suggest that her family struggles have resolved.
