| My daughter’s teacher has been out since last Thursday due to a family emergency. She has not graded an all-tasks assignment. She also repeatedly offered students a chance to retake a different all-tasks assignment but hasn’t been in school for that to happen. Now what? I guess the retake is off the table, which is too bad. But who will grade the assignments? She’s the RT of the department if that matters. It’s too bad because my daughter was relying on the retake - and the other grade- to raise her from a B to an A. Any advice? |
| Yes- be patient. Have empathy. And enjoy your weekend while this teacher may not be able to. |
With literally any other teacher that would be my impulse. I am Team Teacher all the way in most cases. This teacher is a HORRIBLE grader though- so slow. The assignment that isn’t graded yet is from early, early September. The kids have to hound her to please grade. |

The retake won't happen, but she might have passed the AT assignment to be graded by someone else.
I wouldn't stress about it. The new quarter starts on Tuesday, and your child can strive for the A next quarter. Please let the teacher have the time and don't put additional strains on her. |
| I hope the teacher is okay. (That’s missing in your post, OP.) |
You do realize that could be related to the family emergency right? |
| The passive aggressive toxic positivity is not helpful. I’m sure the school will come up with a solution that doesn’t unfairly penalize students and I understand that the unknown is causing stress. |
| Either the stuff doesn't get graded, other teachers help out or she gets an extension. We've had all three of these happen. |
Not OP, but this is not what OP’s post is about. Would be weird and unnecessarily performative for her to offer her best wishes to the teacher on DCUM. Stop trying to shame her. OP can actually be someone who cares about teachers but is trying to figure out how this type of issue is handled. |
Thanks. Of course I hope the woman is alright! Geez. My primary concern is for my child, though, and the reason I posted. The slow grading preceded the emergency- last year was the same thing for my son. In fact, there were assignments she never managed to grade ever but it didn’t matter for my son so he/I didn’t care. I guess the answer is- someone else will grade for her? But who, if she’s the RT? |
This. I remember when my RT’s wife delivered their stillborn first child during the end of the marking period and parents emailed every teacher in the department asking for his phone number. |
Is your child a current senior who needs the grades Right Now? |
This is the most likely case. Happened to my kid last year when the teacher was out a lot on medical leave. It is what it is... |
The only B my kid got in 7th grade was a case like this. Teacher was out for a few weeks at the end of the quarter at the end of the year due to illness. No retakes, not as many assignments/tests. There is not much you can do. |
I think this will be the case for my kid, sadly. Hopefully someone in the department will grade something though!! I’m OP and yes - a senior and yes - I know it’ll be fine. But I still feel bad for my kid. (And the teacher! But more my kid, TBH.. this is a stressful season for 17 year olds!!.) |
