Marking "Homemaker"

Choose Philanthropist fromteh common app drop down menu: A philanthropist is a person who promotes the welfare of others, typically by donating money, time, or effort to charitable causes. While the term is often associated with wealthy individuals, anyone can be a philanthropist by contributing resources to help people, such as volunteering, giving money, or sharing skills.

Blank or align it with your taxes.

I do not think it will matter.

OK but is it still extremely insulting it’s even on there! I mean, I have a degree, I EARNED my degree !!!

Is it extremely insulting? I have a degree too, but it would be wrong and false to list myself as "Political Scientist" when asked for my occupation because that's not actually what I do for a living. The question is about your current job, not your educational background.

Having a degree doesn't make something your occupation. Do you do paid work outside the house? If not, then homemaker. It's fine, but own it, as someone else said.

Anonymous wrote:Wow, homemaker indeed feels like a very outdated term! I’d prefer family caregiver or something more neutral (plus that also captures the very real possibility that someone is caring for aging parents and not just their own children/household). I suppose retired could work, depending on where someone is in their station of life.

But if the kid is fully grown and about to move out, isn’t homemaker more accurate than “family caregiver?” That sounds like you live with a disabled parent or something.

I mean, at some point you need to own what you do all day. That is what they are asking. Why the obsfucation?

"Student of pilates," "amateur chef," etc.

Are you earning moeny as a "Homemaker"? No? Then it isn't asking about a job you make money doing.

It does when it is a profession. It says "Occupatoin/Profession" -- not are you maing moeny at it right now. How about the writer whose novel hasn't made a dime yet and who hasn't started a new project yet? Are they not a writer?

So if homemaker is a respectable occupation/profession, then why are you kicking up a fuss about using the label?

I don't want to be make up some job that I don't have, like consultant, self-employed, etc. And I don't have any issues with "homemaker" but wondering if there is anything we should consider here... now is not the time for me to be rethinking all my life choices, so please no bashing stay at home moms. I do have a college and law degree, if that matters.

Homemaker sounds way better than washed out lawyer that couldn't cut it.

When you're done debating the pros and cons of your kid listing "homemaker" on his or her Common App, can you get back in the kitchen and make me a sammich? Thanks in advance.

I worked harder as a full-time homemaker than I did at any of my lawyer jobs. I feel fortunate and grateful that I had that choice and am not at all apologetic for being a homemaker. No one should be.
