Agree. I live in DC with my kids. It isn’t a crime ridden hellhole as conservative media and Trump paint it. Friends live on the block where Big Balls was attacked. There is rarely crime there.

What?

I live in Shaw. There is such an unacceptable amount of crime here -- drug markets and people tweaking out, shootings, etc. it's real. No one in our neighborhood is unscathed -- everyone, including me, has a story about burglary, mugging, carjackings, witnessing people getting beat up.

There was a moment in 2012/2014 when i felt safe, but that's not true any more. It's slightly better than 2021 but it is still unacceptable. Whenever I leave and visit cities that are actually safe, I feel crazy for staying here.

We can't turn our knee-jerk anti Trumpism into a blindness about this problem.

I am not blind. I just have not experience any crime beyond porch pirates. I feel safe enough to walk my puppy alone at night/early morning. There is very little crime in my area of DC.

We’ll consider yourself fortunate. And maybe try a little empathy for DC residents who don’t have it as good as you do.

+1. Not sure what the problem is with this. These people will be much better off wherever they are housed.

Yes, civilized societies have strong social safety nets that address many of the root causes of poverty, homelessness, and crime. The United States lacks a social safety net, so where are people going to go? The answer has been prison or jail for the last 50+ years. That does little to address the underlying problems and does not do much for public safety, either.

2. Addiction can be the manifestation of untreated mental health issues, such as severe ADHD, bipolar disorder, severe depression, severe anxiety, etc. Users self-medicate with drugs. Again, this can happen to anyone with serious mental health issues who does not receive a diagnosis and successful treatment.

3. Stop accusing addicts of being lazy or morally deficient or lacking willpower. I guarantee that if I give you the right cocktail of drugs, you will be an addict too, and will have a terribly hard time digging yourself out. And maybe you never will.

Of course all of these things can be true as can myriad other ways that one can become an addict. That’s why it’s not a disease. There are deliberate actions that cause it.

And yet I'm sure you will complain all day about speeding drivers, even though you're roughly a million times more likely to be murdered than be hit by a speeding driver.

I live on the 14th Street corridor within spitting distance of Swann. I too have never been a crime victim beyond porch pirates. I’m not naive that it’s not happening, but with a little common sense you’re good. I am much more concerned about the rat problem than the crime problem at the moment.

Say what? The odds of being hit by a car are 1-in-4292 and it is higher in urban areas. The odds of being murdered in DC are roughly equivalent, HOWEVER, 90% of all DC murders happen in Wards 7 & 8 east of the Anacostia river. There have been an average of 2 murders in all of Ward 3 each year since 2021, with the most at 5 happening in 2015.

Neither event is super likely, but nobody who lives and mostly spends their time in Ward 3 (or Bethesda or Georgetown or other nice areas) has much risk of being murdered

The U.S. lacks a safety net? Entitlements are the largest spending burden we have. It outpaces defense.

Exactly. Most normal people want safer neighborhoods.

Same. Rats are ridiculous. Maryland drivers are dangerous.

But I'm not worried about 15 year old boys. I'm not out buying drugs at 3 am.

Go spend some time in Navy Yard or the Wharf and tell me you only have to be worried about feral teens at 3am. One intentionally got inches from plowing into my stroller with his bike yesterday.

We have a housing crisis. We have an expensive healthcare system tied to employment with limited mental health services. We fail to see addiction as a disease and view it as a moral failure.

No, we do not have a "housing crisis." We have vacancies in every city, everywhere. And even if we did not, new housing could be built easily and quickly.

What we have is a lack of will to say, you will not live on public streets, infringing on everyone else's right to safety and to enjoy parks, etc. If you do not have your own home, or a relative to take you in, you will be moved to a facility. End of discussion.

Addiction is not a disease. It does not develop out of nowhere. It is the result of substance use and abuse.

This is so crazy I had to read it twice. There is very little affordable housing available, it's mostly luxury housing. And that's also what contractors are building these days. Not housing for the unhoused.

Also...who do you think is going to pay for all the unhoused being lodged in a "facility?"

I don’t plan on hanging out on Swann Street at 3 am anytime soon. I’m good.
