What's an average girl pace for a xc mile? DD is not even close to 8 minutes but has been dropping time

If she keeps running consistently, her time will continue to drop.

(My own DD is not especially fast but I think after not running much over the summer, she’s at 6.5-7.)

A 7:05 mile would equate to a 22 minute 5k which would earn a girl a spot in the top 7 of most/many ( not all) high school girls teams. Which would be a solid time and make her above average

Yeah- not true.

If you look at results from Third Battle last year (relatively easy XC course compared to Oatlands). The time you listed above would have a girl placing in the 120s (out of 150).

Google AI Overview says the following, which seems to be on target:

"There isn't a single "average" time for high school girls in cross country because it varies significantly by school, region, skill level (varsity vs. JV), and course difficulty, but a competitive 5K (3.1 miles) time for a high school girl would be under 20 minutes, with times around 21-22 minutes considered decent for a JV runner, and top athletes running well under 19 minutes."

Actually, this race perfectly demonstrates how 22 min is an average time.

If you look at all the races - its 22 min is about 150 out of 300 varsity runners

The jv races had about 55 girls running under 22, and 350 girls running slower than 22

If you look at the team results, many teams has girls running 22 min in there top 7.

So 22 min is certainly an average and respectable time. Though, not a competitive time.

PP who said my DD runs 6.5-7 and is not especially fast. She’s a freshman, school has only varsity. I assume that means she won’t really be doing meets. New to this so don’t know the process, but she’s generally in it for the training and camaraderie, so all good as far as I’m concerned.

Many schools only have “varsity Xc.” But when it comes to a meet, the top 7-10 race in the Varsity race, and the next 10-20 race in the jv race. You can only have so many girls in one race.

If she can run 7 min pace for a 5k she’ll probably race most weekends.

I agree. Most big invitationals have JV heats, and often, freshman heats. This is good for a freshman! I hope they give her some race experience!

My daughter is a rising freshman with past running experience and she is under 19 for races. Please note she is trans, but her pace really comes from her dedicated training throughout MS, and no other reason.

Under 19 for a freshman girl is highly competitive. Will have no problem getting a top 7 spot

It's likely just trolling, so don't bother. I do wonder how @JeffSteele would react to someone using such a sensitive subject as bait.

My son is a freshman on XC. On average they are running about 5 miles a day - hardly “hanging out”! I’d like to see the football team try that!
