NoVA Public XC

My daughter is thinking of joining the cross country team at her large public HS. She has not trained at all. Will she be accepted and will it be ok if she is slow/walking at first?

depends on the school. Our large FCPS school is only taking 40 girls/40 boys and it will be based on time they run the mile in.

Oh and the mile run is this coming Wednesday.

What time is she expected to run? We need a starting point. Is below 10mins/mile the norm?

At many schools it's no cut. If your daughter is willing to put in the time for August practices, she will absolutely improve both stamina and time. It's a great sport!

My kid is also trying out, and my understanding is that there is a qualifying time (sorry, no clue what it is) that they need to meet.

For freshman- our HS coach wants girls to be able to run under a 7minute mile. There is some wiggle room but that is the expectation. There is one returning girl who runs under 5 minutes. I know Robinson HS has 3-4 girls that run under 5 minutes.

Does she like running? Mine DD is a runner and does not find XC enjoyable. It is a hard sport with lots of miles. I think some people think it is oddball kids having a place to hangout.

This makes me chuckle because for many there's a lot of truth here. And it doesn't get better if you compete in college. I can attest. However the sense of accomplishment if you get better in XC is terrific.

This must vary by coach, but my kid claims the cutoff is a 9 minute mile.

I guess they can do that running as fast as possible for one mile…on a track?

The top XC HS runner in the country was at 17:31 in the national championships…which is much closer to 6 minutes than 5 minutes per mile.

Why hasn’t she been running all summer? It’s incredible that people think they can just go join a team with no skill.

To be fair, we're talking about High School XC here, no skill involved.

Have you looked at the XC teams around here? There is definitely skill. And while the teams might be big only the top 10 compete in the invitational races
