Old Geezers at Gyms

Women. Complaining that men spend too much time poking at their phones. Really? lmao, YMBKM.

Sounds like a lot of you need to change gyms. I'd recommend mine but don't want the toxicity.

Good for the old people still working out.

Because I don’t see younger people or women taking up permanent residency near pieces of work-out equipment. It’s always some old guy.

I see it all. the. time.

Usually some dude so into his phone/music, they “forget” to get up and move.

And those same guys never wipe down the equipment. You aren’t one of those, are you?

This. This. this.

I am a pretty serious fitness person. I do my sets, wipe down and move on.

I do not carry a back pack with me around the gym.

I do not have a gallon jug of electrolytes with me.

But gym douches who leave there bag at a machine, their wraps and gallon of whatever at another and spend 90% dabbing other gym bros so I have no idea what machine is available are the worst.

Or sit there watching a twitch stream or a movie kill me.

At least if a geriatric man is napping on a machine he is only consuming one option.

Thumbs up to the old geezers!

Strong Independent Women (TM) are so lacking in agency that they cannot even ask another person at the gym if they can work in. Should such delicate, passive creatures really even be allowed out in public unescorted? Clearly these fragile blossoms need to be under the protection of a man if there is any need for interaction with any strange men (so coarse and brutish, ugh) they should happen to encounter.

It's their MO.

OP, a lot of insurance plans now have agreements with health plans for super cheap rates. At Lifetime these memberships are limited to certain hours so that if you come during this time frame you are surrounded by geezers who spend hours at the gym; with no job to go to they are in no hurry.

Before people judge me, my particular resentment comes from the fact that my workout hours coincide with the insurance hours and a lot of the class schedule has been given over to specialized elderly classes. They even fill up the "regular" classes so that there's an overall dumbing down/easing up of intensity that I don't like. I don't go to the gym for easy.

I can hear the tiny violins.
When you're one of those geezers, you'll wish there were more classes dedicated to them.

I am sure nuclear war will have occurred before I get to be a "gezzer" but TY for the vote of confidence.

I'm an old geezer, recently retired. I can't seem to start a new thread so hijacking this one. Any advice on how to handle a gym bully? She's physically much bigger than me. I have no idea why but so far in one class she threw heavy weights near my head (there is at least one witness), hit and bruised me in another class and now I'm icing a knee because she backed into me during dance without reason. She used to be a friend.

You don’t go to the gym for easy… right now.

But one day you may. Be grateful programs will exist for you.

I’m supportive of ANYBODY who is going to the gym. Go, you!

Sure, but if classes geared towards the elderly take the place of classes for more able-bodied people, that's a problem. It will eventually simply become a gym for the elderly, as younger folks migrate to other gyms. And that's not a great business model, since elderly people, well...they're less likely to be long-term members.

I would LOVE a gym dedicated to older people. Sign me up and I'll overlook your ignorant "more able-bodied people" remark.

I don’t know why you’re taking offense. My gym literally has classes for the elderly that go a bit slower and aren’t as intense, which is generally appropriate for that age group. Older people are more likely to have joint pain, muscle loss, chronic illnesses, etc. I don’t see anyone over 60 in my bootcamp classes—there’s too much high impact activity and very rapid transitions. It’s not an insult, just reality.

At my gym, the young men and women spend their time sitting on machines and texting. It is obnoxious. They also leave their towels on the machines for ever as their seat.

Dementia? Tell the gym manager, she can't keep assaulting you regardless of what her reason is.

I call bull$h!t. At my gym it's the 20 - 30 somethings taking up 3 machines. The 84 year old does what he needs to on one machine and moves on.
