Old Geezers at Gyms

'cause all old people are filthy rich, right? Hardly any old people on Medicaid that's being cut.

20-30 minutes - if the person is actually using the equipment - is not "monopolizing" or rude. It's a reasonable amount of time that fit the guidelines/rules of facilities. You only use a treadmill or spin for ten minutes?

OP, a lot of insurance plans now have agreements with health plans for super cheap rates. At Lifetime these memberships are limited to certain hours so that if you come during this time frame you are surrounded by geezers who spend hours at the gym; with no job to go to they are in no hurry.

Before people judge me, my particular resentment comes from the fact that my workout hours coincide with the insurance hours and a lot of the class schedule has been given over to specialized elderly classes. They even fill up the "regular" classes so that there's an overall dumbing down/easing up of intensity that I don't like. I don't go to the gym for easy.

I can hear the tiny violins.
When you're one of those geezers, you'll wish there were more classes dedicated to them.

You don’t go to the gym for easy… right now.

But one day you may. Be grateful programs will exist for you.

I’m supportive of ANYBODY who is going to the gym. Go, you!

Because I don’t see younger people or women taking up permanent residency near pieces of work-out equipment. It’s always some old guy.

Nope. It's always men of all ages. I see groups of teenage boys monopolizing equipment while they all work in sets. I see adult men of all ages take over multiple pieces of equipment by leaving their stuff (bag, water bottle, etc.) on the machines while they "use" 2-3 machine at a time. I see men who will use a machine for excessive amount of time by either doing an excessive number of sets or they are on their phones and NOT exercising. I occasionally see a couple do this but most of the time it's adult men of all ages that feel entitled at the gym.

It's so rude and inconsiderate.

Nah....it's machismo! You're all just demasculating these poor teenage boys and men.

Sure, but if classes geared towards the elderly take the place of classes for more able-bodied people, that's a problem. It will eventually simply become a gym for the elderly, as younger folks migrate to other gyms. And that's not a great business model, since elderly people, well...they're less likely to be long-term members.

I would LOVE a gym dedicated to older people. Sign me up and I'll overlook your ignorant "more able-bodied people" remark.

You were in such a hurry to use the equipment. I'm sure they didn't want to keep you waiting even longer while they took too long (for you) to clean it.

Well, then come to Lifetime. I was finishing up a class today, taking my time, I turned around and there's an old lady glaring at me because she's 20 minutes early for the next class and wants my spot.

At my gym it's mostly teen boys who monopolize the machines. They sit on them, lost in their phones.

+1 Olney One Life is unusable. All of the weights are hogged up by teen kids on their phones. Management doesn’t care.

The OP is ridiculous. A few points:

1. Only phenomenally insecure or immature people criticize/judge the lifestyles of others.

2. 60-70 is not old, and the odds are high that most of those people are working professionals, so their schedule is no less important than yours.

3. 20-30 minutes on certain equipment is not excessive. For example, that's 1 mile walking, or 2-4 miles running, on a treadmill.

4. Someone else's workout routine is no one else's business.

5. Reasonable, kind, mentally-sound people would be happy for anyone who is trying to stay healthy.

Yeah, I see that too. I just ask if they are done or let them know I am waiting and they move on. I don’t think they really mean to be rude. They just aren’t that aware of their surroundings.

I was in a bad mood when I wrote that but I stand by my observation, but you’re right. I also ask if they’re finished and I’ve never been met with resistance or even an attitude. The kids are nice. However, I wish management would do something like put up a flyer or something to remind people to not hog up the machines.
