Let's pretend we're 1996.

I still have my AOL account. You can rip it from my cold dead hands.

I'm 51, and I feel like by 1996 people my age had fully embraced the internet and did not consider it for dweebs and dorks.

I had a stick shift and manual steering nissan as my first car in DC. Parallel parking that thing was a b****.

I have at home an Internet Phone Book in Hardcopy from 1996. You look up by category and it gives you websites.

I’m heading to Fair Oaks Mall to get some suits for my first job - gonna try Casual Corner, Cache & The Limited (Outback Red). I’ll end up buying button covers for my plain navy suit and several shell tops from Dress Barn.

Got an oxblood briefcase as a grad gift! Hope I can get away with a blazer and skirt rather than an actual suit. I’m pulling my long hair back into a low ponytail clipped with a satiny bow or sometimes I’ll do a satiny headband.

I’ll ruin my new 9West pumps on the Old Town cobblestone first day.

I want that! I had no idea how to find websites, so I mainly used the Internet for email and chat.

This $107 billion budget deficit is disastrous. If we work together maybe we can balance the budget within the next few years.

I wish I had saved emails and IMs from AOL back then and I’ll never be able to get those back after my parents closed the account. They’re out there floating around in space somewhere and what I wouldn’t give to know what my 1996 brain was thinking back then and take a look back. I was a senior in high school and it was just such a blissful, simpler time. Maybe because it was pre 9/11? Or pre social media? I don’t know-my DD is in high school now and I just wish she could grow up when I did. Things seem much harder and darker now.
