On July 3, 2025, President Donald Trump used the term "Shylocks" to refer to some bankers during a speech at the Iowa State Fairgrounds, while discussing his "One Big Beautiful Bill Act." He said, "No death tax, no estate tax, no going to the banks and borrowing from, in some cases, a fine banker and in some cases, Shylocks and bad people. They destroyed a lot of families, but we did the opposite."

Trump later claimed he was unaware of the term’s antisemitic connotations, stating, "I’ve never heard it that way. To me, a Shylock is somebody that’s a money lender at high rates

What's the term for someone who takes out loans at high (or low) rates and then declines to pay them back.every.time?

'Pulling a Donald."

MAGA is made up.of Christian right wing terrorists who still blame Jews for the crucification of Christ. I had a discussion with one and pointed out that the death of Christ on the cross is what guarantees Christians forgiveness of sins and eternal life and that without His death in this way there is no Christianity

I also pointed out that it was Pontius Pilate. Who presided over the trial of Christ and have the order for His death.

Facts are of no interest to them.

I’m torn between believing him because he’s stupid and not believing him because he lies about everything.

Come on, you know he's lying

But *you* know he's stupid. It's a real conundrum.

OK. Trump is a stupid lying Son of a "biscuit."

2. The incredibly common phrase "pound of flesh" is just as antisemitic; in fact, the character Shylock in Shakespeare's play The Merchant of Venice sets the effective collateral for a loan as a pound of flesh.

3. Which is more anti-semitic? Well, in context, referring to bankers as Shylock (who is an infamous banker) has some theoretical degree of coherence even without express resort to the antisemitic overtones. The same cannot be said for "pound of flesh" which is used far more routinely. In that respect, it's a little weird to make a news story out of "Shylock" while staying silent when the phrase "pound of flesh" is used (a not infrequent occurrence).

4. Is it really believable that Trump was unaware of the antisemitic context surround shylock? No, I don't think so. Its obscurity and its ickiness strike me as comparable, so if you know the word, you probably know it's bad.

5. Would this be national news if, say, Hillary Clinton or Cory Booker said it? Cant imagine. Then again, it's easier to imagine trump affirmatively wanting to do a dog whistle, so it's not an apples to apples comparison.

6. On balance, I think this is just one more data point for why trump is a bad guy, but it's not crazy to think the people in this thread vowing to continue to "fight" or condemning the press as some how complicit are maybe doing a bit much.

If only trump's bankers had demanded their pound of flesh for every defaulted loan!

She’s not Jewish, she simply learned some things about the religion and raises her kids Jewish. She didn’t grow up Jewish. She doesn’t have Jewish DNA. She’s a phony.

Shylocks is an antisemitic slur. It’s hateful. Let’s see if those Jewish organizations targeting anyone who protest the killing of Palestinians speak up.

Supposedly. She converted.

This is the stuff I love Trump for. Everyone thinks he’s dumb then he drops one of these.

MAGA loves a little casual antisemitism

I thought this was why Democrats hate bankers so much. Or is it that they hate Jews because they are bankers?

MAGAS only care about antiSemitism if the can use it to screw colleges, universities and elites.

He's from New York! He absolutely knows what it means. And he used it "correctly" in his little ranting good people vs bad people speech. Nobody his age & from the boros doesn't know what a shylock is.

But tHaT's DiFfErEnT!

After a phone call with the vice president on Wednesday, Foxman said it was clear there was no ill-intent and that Biden had been a true friend to Jews and a stalwart against bigotry.

“He has turned a rhetorical gaffe into a teachable moment,” Foxman said, adding that he and the vice president had “agreed that perhaps he needs to bone up on his Shakespeare.”

Correct, and he apologized the next day. Has Trump apologized yet?

So it's about the apology, not the use of the word?

+1
Even if/when he apologizes, this crowd isn't going to let it go, the way they did with Biden.

They never do because it isn't even about the apology, but rather the sense of POWER a person feels when another person is forced to apologize. Oftentimes, the people demanding an apology have no right to be offended (i.e., they're offended for other people). Even if they do have a right to be offended, they don't have the right to demand an apology for everyone who does. People are individuals, not a group.

As a Jewish person, I wasn't offended. If you're not Jewish, you have no right to be offended on my behalf. Also, the ADL doesn't speak for me, nor do others on this board might be Jewish.

He's not going to apologize. He never does.

No, this is wrong, she converted, which makes her Jewish. Period. Even if you wish she wasn’t.
