Very good reason to get your Shingrix vaccine as soon as you are eligible!!

62 and still haven’t had the vaccine. I know I need to. Please be honest- how bad is the reaction typically to the shots? I had a bad reaction to Covid vaccines if that is any indication

My mom had horrific shingles starting in her 40s and my sister got them in her 40s too. Fortunately I was an early test kid for the chicken pox vaccine (my sister got them on her eye and my parents jumped at the chance to avoid it).

For me, the second shot was barely noticeable compared to the first.

First one was fine dor me. Second one was harder but glad I got both.

Public Health Nurse here.

I just want to state that there is a difference between a reaction (which typically would take place within 20 min of admin-so stay at the MD office for that timeline) and side effects. Here is the VIS for anyone interested. Yes you will feel lousy/have side effects with this one. And that is your immune system mounting a response- which is normal. Please get the vaccine- which is two doses for protection.

You already carried the virus before you got shingles, it's the chicken pox virus which you were exposed to as a child.

And yes, the answer is that it is worth getting the vaccine even if you've already had shingles. I've spoken about this with more than one doctor as I cared for elder patients who suffered shingles and were encouraged to get the vaccine, which will reduce the risk of a recurrence and reduce the severity of disease - just like influenza, covid and other vaccines do.

NP with a fun fact. I didn’t catch chicken pox until age 30, from, we later realized, a little blonde girl on the train from Stockholm to Oslo.

Yes, I have gotten both shingles vaccines.

My sister (who is a physician!!) didn't catch chicken pox until she was 32 and pregnant with her second child. It was really scary.

I'm shocked by this. I had a job in a hospital and they checked my vaccine records and had me get a couple boosters as well as a TB test.

After years of putting it off, I got dose 1 on Friday. It wasn’t too bad. Sore arm and a little achy. No fever. Thought it did me in less than the COVID vaccine.

Just got my first dose, partly inspired by this thread. Nervous about side effects(I’m only 45 minutes in), but I’m glad shot 1 is done.

Updating to say that 14 hours later I feel fine.
