Attitude is so much of it too. |
| I am 54. Started to feel like I could be considered old. I guess it's arguably late middle age until 60. I'd say 60 and older is "old." Everything is relative. It just is. Friends my age are grandparents. That is old. |
I believe that 65 is considered the beginning of old age. Average life expectancy is 77.5 in US so very old may be 75 and above. However millions of people live into their 80s and 90s so perhaps very old age is above life expectancy. |
Yeah, I think my thoughts about this have been influenced a bit after moving into a house with a neighbor across the street who is 101. Based on his perspective, I'm only half way through... |
| 50 or older |
|
"Life expectancy" with no qualifier means life expectancy at birth, which includes infant mortality, death from childhood illness and accidents, etc. It's not a good metric of how long the average adult will live. A better metric would be something like life expectancy at age 20 or so. |

Ahh geez. I turned 50 in November, so I guess I am starting to feel it a bit.
Started a new job last year, so going through the on-boarding and stuff was interesting since there were recent college grads in my group and I could have been their parent! My kids are their peers! Zoinks. Having my parents around too makes me feel "younger" in a way - I still get calls from my now 77 yo Mom asking if I did such and such. My Dad is 86 and I was with them both this past weekend and really for the first time see them as slowing down. My Mom isn't as active - she still plays pickleball and swims - but my Dad has really slowed down. Walks distances with a cane, around the house, has that old guy shuffle. Makes me appreciate things for sure. |
I am not as athletic as PP but I also find people are nice to me. I don’t feel invisible, have family and good friends and strangers often smile and say hello when I am walking our dogs. |
Good point. I doubled checked and it doesn’t change that much at 20. 75-80 years. But perhaps 80 is more accurate for very old. As many have said - how well people age depends on various factors such as genes/ life style/ exercise/ diet and access to medical care: |
I think the women talking about being invisible are bummed about being invisible to men which is really sad. Second women aren’t alone in having a mid life crisis. Women do plastic surgery and men buy a sports car and hit on younger women. |
Not all of us. I did buy a fast car but I don’t hit on younger women, or any women. But you do become invisible in a way when you get older. I don’t mind it though. |
| If you want to stay in spotlight, you can do what many "old" women have done - Dolly Parton or Nancy Pelosi just to name two |
| AARP starts at 50. |
| 56 hit hard. |
