Remove McLean or Langley HS from any discussion and Stuart still remains an average school with a large percentage of kids that qualify for free or reduced lunches and a much greater safety issue. The prices of homes that feed into Stuart reflect this.

Anyone looking to sell a home in the Stuart district, make sure you put in the description that Jay Matthews has it on his Challenge Index.

Looks like the Asians and Whites are bringing up the IB averages for the other ethnic groups.

Why would anyone want to transfer into Stuart? I guess gang members want to be with gang members.

Stuart historically gets more transfers into the school than transfers out. This year, 35 more out-of-boundary students transferred into the school than transfered out. Like Marshall, Stuart gets a lot of transfers from Falls Church HS. The rest are mostly from Annandale HS. Obviously, it's snide to suggest any of those students are gang members. Gang members don't typically come from homes where the parents know how to do the paperwork for a timely pupil placement.

Kids may be able to get a good education at Falls Church HS as well, but it's a fact that parents who live in that attendance area are more likely than parents in any other part of the county to try and get their kids transferred to a different school. It's not surprising that people would pay more money for a house in FCC assigned to George Mason than a house across Lee Highway assigned to Falls Church.

It's so comical how you contradict yourself, and you freely throw around ill informed comments to back up your weak arguments. I'll borrow a line from you.

Stuart gang members and their families "don't come from homes where the parents know how to do the paperwork for a timely pupil placement" and that is why they haven't transferred out of Stuart in droves yet.

The more likely reason why few kids have probably transferred out of Stuart is because almost 60% of the kids there qualify for free or reduced lunch. These kids from low income families cannot afford to transfer out b/c they would be responsible for their own mode of transportation in order to get to the other school. Fairfax County does not offer bus service for kids that attend an out of boundary school unless it's TJ or AAP.

Marshall and Stuart are probably underenrolled, and in order to entice more kids to come to that school, that is why they offer IB. If they did not offer IB, don't expect any kids from a school with higher test scores to want to transfer there.

Here's an interesting stat in that Stuart has the highest total retention rate over at least the past 5 years (I didn't bother to go back more than 5 years). I take retention to mean the kids repeat the grade.

Lots of kids are very happy at Stuart and have parents who rave about it and are very involved in the school. Their kids are getting a good education and getting into good colleges. That's reflected in the student transfer numbers, with parents "in-the-know" moving their kids to Stuart for the IB program.

LMAO!

You do sound like an A when you post such mean things....Not sure why you find it so hard to understand that a school with a lot of lower-income students could still do a good job of meeting the needs of all students....either you live in a bubble or had some bad experience in your past that's not relevant to Stuart even though you try and make it so...time to give it a rest and let parents with ACTUAL experience at Stuart share their stories with others!!

Posting stats from the school's webpage is not mean. It's just the facts baby.

Do yourself a favor and move into the Stuart district so that your kids can enjoy also.

Our DD and DS have been at Sleepy Hollow, Glasgow and Stuart. They had no problems and DD is now at W&M. We hadn't gone out of our way to find ethnically diverse schools, but I think it's turned out to be very good for them. We also love our neighborhood. It's an older area, 7-8 miles to DC, no cookie-cutter houses and lots of trees. I wish Baileys' X-Roads and Seven Corners had better shopping, but it's still an easy drive to Arlington or Tysons and there are some great restaurants in the immediate area.

I'm the previous poster who recently moved into FCC. I didn't drink any kool-aid, was just pointing out the differences in home prices, which seemed to be related to which school the house was districted for. For me, the schools in FCC, Arlington, Fairfax/Mclean all seemed great, so it wasn't a deciding factor (although I did like that both Arlington and FCC both have full day kindergarten and guaranteed after school care - but that wouldn't have been enough to sway me one way or the other, I just found the house I liked in FCC). Since I did end up in FCC, I'm now kind of psyched for the smaller school district and "homier" feel....

As to people living in condos or rentals, I'm really hoping that people who live here wouldn't care one way or the other what sort of house or apt someone lives in. Seems to be lots of Foreign Service folks who rent houses in FCC for the schools, and all sorts of houses big and small throughout the city.

Also, from what I understand the "resentment" about the condos/apartments would have to do with the numbers they are bringing in and the planners in the city - not the actual people that live there!

We are moving to Falls Church from out of state right before the start of the school year... my daughter will be attending kindergarten at Mount Daniel, does anyone else have a kindergartener there? I would love to find my daughter a new friend before the start of the school year. Contact me at Emiliecf@hotmail.com if you'd like to set up a playdate. Thanks!
