WTF is AP Precalc BC?
Is this supposed to make kids feel extra smart. It’s precalc. Just call is precalc |
Yeah, the AP Precalc is just stupid. I think it was added so that more kids could have increased rigor or AP classes without taking Calculus. |
Mine is in the 99th percentile, has received honors or distinguished honors on the AMCs taking them early, and will be taking Algebra II in ninth grade. He has no interest I. Giving up his summer to take Geometry. This is a kid on two different math teams but he also loves backpacking and hiking and being outside. Plenty of bright/gifted math kids who don’t take summer math classes to advance. |
AP precalc actually kind of makes sense to me. Colleges have too many kids entering who need remedial math. AP precalc is a way for the colleges to see which (non-STEM) kids won't need remedial math placement. It makes no sense for kids going into STEM or kids who will take AP Calc. The class is intended for the non-STEM, non-AP Calc kids to show colleges that they're good enough in math to bypass whatever remedial floor the college has in place. |
Other students in this situation take more advanced math classes at GMU once they have completed all of the AP math classes at their high school. |
No, AP is used to shunt the remedial math students out of the math department entirely, for non-math majors, so the college can claim they still require a basic level math for all students. Students who take *any* math in college have no use for AP Precalc credit. |
