"Men Die More, Snowboarding Is Safer, and More Surprising Insights From Lifetime Ski Study" https://gearjunkie.com/winter/ski-helmet-safety-expert-insights |
Absolutely. |
| early 50s lifelong skier here with a family ski house who is tapping out. Over the holidays I had what wasn’t even a bad fall on a beautiful day out west on a blue run and completely tore my acl and also tore my meniscus on both sides. I’m currently post op and on crutches with a full leg brace for 6 weeks and in pt for 9 mos. It’s been a painful, frustrating, expensive and super disruptive experience that is months from wrapping up. One of my teens also has a ski injury right now. Be careful out there! |
Isn't there a phenomenon for this? I swear there is. When something applies to you, you pay more attention to it, even subconsciously. Like when you buy a new car and suddenly you see the same make & model care everywhere and it seems like everyone bought the same car. |
recency bias? |

Things are crowded and some places are badly designed.
My teen was badly injured last year at a junction between a green slope and a black —someone coming fast down the black skied right into her and then kept going. Her ski sliced through her leg and luckily missed her artery or her meniscus but it was still a long recovery and may never be totally right again. It could have been much worse if the ski had come up 6 inches higher. I was absolutely astounded the ski cut through her thick ski pants and so much flesh. |
| We recently went for a ski weekend to 7 springs and in just those 2 days we saw the ski payroll transport 2 diff skiers. In sum, it seems like injuries are waaaay up from what I saw in person |
Observer bias. |
That's it! thanks for chiming in with the right type of bias. |
| A 12 year old from mass, a college student from William college, and the actress from bling empire were all wearing helmets and died in accidents since December. I’m sure there is more but coming across 3 in my news feed is a lot. |
It’s confirmation bias. |
Let me remind you how your news feed works. You click on “drones terrorizing nj skies” and then another article about drones pops up. You click on that article, and now the algorithm knows you are interested in drones. |

POV: you just ruined your life but this is the most male attention you’ve had in months
