Ugliest Elite College?

I was also underwhelmed by Northwestern. They have a billion dollar football practice facility and a welcoming center on the lake, but the rest of it seemed drab and dated and charmless. Plus, Evanston is pretty boring. The rest of the T20 are all pretty nice.

Wow, this is so spot on. Love what you said about MIT and it somehow being part of its charm in a way that wouldn’t work for other schools. Northwestern location and welcome center is stunning. Really dislike brutalist buildings at all schools.

Cornell is sort of hodge lodge feeling. There are some buildings that are quite beautiful and setting is unique with gorges.

MIT building don't have names; they have numbers. Also part of the charm...

Georgetown is fairly unattractive. Plus it’s under a flight path.

Wow, I grew up in Pasadena and would regularly take visitors on tours of Caltech's campus and everyone loved the beautiful fountains and the arched walkways. It's the Spanish mission style, which I guess is not for everyone.

Agree, Caltech is beautiful. I lived down the street from campus and loved walking around the fountains and ponds.

I happened to live close to campus too! I miss it everyday, Pasadena is such a beautiful place, especially for a Caltech student.

You don't like Yale? Ooookaaay.

I don’t like it either, and I’ve been to most of the residential colleges! I prefer uchicago’s interpretation of Oxbridge design.

Weird hair-splitting exercise, but the whole thread is basically a retread, so whatever. Yale is high up on any credible list of the most attractive American universities.

Geez, I really liked Georgetown. The neighborhood is great, too.

I've never been to Brown but my kid thought it was meh. I was underwhelmed by Penn, other than the area right next to Wharton.

Boring post after boring post.

Everyone understands that Yale is seen as beautiful.

I thought Amherst, Cornell and Georgetown were attractive when we visited. Didn’t see the appeal of the Wesleyan campus.

Yale?

You crazy bruh.

I posted this already early on the thread, Yale is so polarizing!

No. You are just obtuse.

Saying Yale is ugly is like saying Einstein was dumb.

Just nonsensical.

So many butthurt people. It’s a stuffy old college campus, not everyone’s gonna like it.

you must really hate Oxford

There’s rightful reasons to not love Oxford’s campus. Have you ever actually been inside or have you just idealized walking around the area? There’s a lot of dilapidated facilities and living in British accommodations might not be everyone’s favorite thing.

I went there for three years! Ha!

The outskirts of Cornell’s campus are terrible but the A&S area is lovely with an incredible view so I think it’s really nice for undergrads staying on campus in that area. I like Stanford’s campus but I grew up in California so perhaps it’s an acquired taste.

I remember the insides of some of the buildings at MIT when I was there....they were depressing and kind of creepy--do they still have those long drab hallways that seem to go on forever (especially if the building is empty)?

You mean the "infinite hallway" ??? MIT is awesome. It's an urban school on a small campus but does have some nice outside space.

Wesleyan's Olin library is beautiful. As is Foss hill. And the houses you live in junior year are charming New England houses.

NP. Caltech is a popular location for newlyweds to take photos. Many pretty spots. Some of the newer buildings might be too modern for some, but they are interesting at least. The neighborhood is picturesque as well.

What I see: a mid library with really flat grass and no landscaping, really ugly undeveloped common grounds which make the campus off putting and poorly designed (foss hill is my least favorite part of campus), and some houses. The only part of Wesleyans campus I liked was I believe some well landscaped area next to a theatre. The rest of the campus ranges from strange (arts building), ugly (science complex), to small and unpleasant (admissions/anthropology building).

Umich is hideous with a hodgepodge of architecture.
