Son is a Jr.
1600 SAT and maxed out on GPA. ZERO ECs other than playing in the Soccer team. No family member ever attended. Simple Essay, nothing special. White kid, not minority. |
Where is this coming from? |
High GPA and SAT scores are the easy part for MIT admissions... |
or any top 20 college |
Fr. That’s not good enough. Target for mit is 1570 with 800 math. |
| MIT accepts all kinds of students, but our counselor emphasizes that they care a lot more about Asian immigrants and URM than white students. 20 of the 24 Asian immigrants who’ve applied to mit from DC’s school have gotten in. White peers with better stats are often rejected- 12 of 35 have been accepted. |
Hope you are right...does first generation American count? |
Obviously these numbers are over time but those are great rates of acceptance, whether white or Asian. |
Yep |
Per the CDS. 25% percentile is a 1520. And ~9% had an ERW score of 700 or less, so even if 800 math, 9% of the class is at 1500 or less. 1550 is the median. Given an athletic recruit is hooked and the above info, I wouldn’t think a 1570 is true for them. It’s not true for half the class. Also, in my area (not in DMV) I have heard 700 min for math to be considered viable for recruiting (rowing, in the case). |
What you don't see are the associations with HHI/QB admits. I saw a QB admit on reddit this cycle with a sub 1500. If you are a standard public school student, best be getting 1550+. |
| Might be crossing sub threads here. This is in response to what’s required to be a recruited athlete. |
| ^also add the QB is not ‘easy’. I would not assume all QB is sub the median, or athletes, First-Gen, etc. that’s not to say that 1550+ isn’t a better place to be, but according to MIT on their blog, they don’t select for scores but the things they do select for tend to correlate with higher scores. The score is a ‘can you do the work and be successful here’ validation check |
Athletics isn't that important. The coaches pretty much get who they get. It's D3 and the athletes need to be at the median. |
100% percent false. Recruited athlete will take you to a 50-65% chance depending on the rest of your material. You typically need to be over 1500 with a 750M to even enter the conversation and 770M is preferred. You might see a few in helmet sports dip below. Someone carrying a near perfect GPA with high test scores while being a strong enough athlete to play in the largest D3 sports program in the country is a pretty rare animal and MIT wants them; badly. |
