In my experience as a resident of NE DC for nearly 20 years, the vast majority of people who drive remarkably poorly and dangerously in my neighborhood are black. That being said, most black drivers I see drive neither poorly nor dangerously. |
This is total nonsense. Very few are the instances when I can discern the race of a driver who speeds past me, cuts me off, turns without indicating, runs a red light, or generally drives like a nutcase. But I can see their license plate. And their license plate is usually Maryland. |
That may be, I’m just saying the vast majority of bad Maryland drivers I ever encounter — living in upper NW, near Maryland, and having grown up in Maryland — are white. So that’s who I think of when people use the phrase. I’m certainly not going to argue about what other people have in mind when they say it, I have no basis for disputing that. |
| Between the speed cameras, new stop lights, new stop signs, new speed bunps, yellow light shortening, lane shrinkage, and flexposts getting around town is becoming a nightmare. It doesn't even seem safer. What the heck has DDOT been smoking? |
What free handouts? |
No. A “nightmare” is being seriously injured or killed in a crash or having a relative suffer such a fate. The roads don’t seem safer because the number of self-centered jerks on the road is at all time highs due to the absence of proper enforcement. |
+1 I'm always thinking of the white BMW drivers with MD plates barreling down Reno Rd. swerving around Murch and Eaton kids trying to walk home from school. |

I live in Fairfax County and dread going into DC, and fear of getting a ticket is high up on the list of reasons why. I am very careful and have not gotten a traffic ticket in DC yet, but I am constantly in fear of inadvertently being stuck partially in an intersection in gridlock when the light changes, or turn incorrectly, or whatever.
It is obviously a way for the city to get money. I do not need to go in any more for work, and definitely not for a restaurant, there are plenty where I live. But fear of tickets makes me want to go even less. I would feel differently if it were actual police monitoring and giving tickets. |
As someone who lives in Maryland by the DC border I can say with certainty that there are plenty of bad DC drivers as well flying through my neighborhood. |
| When I taught my (also) black kids that Maryland drivers are butt, I was thinking of some hill jack from Gaithersburg, but now that you mention it, the brothers from PG can’t hoop without traveling and drive like sht. |
Interesting take. You will have a lot more than tickets to worry about if you speed in your home state: https://jalopnik.com/never-speed-in-virginia-lessons-from-my-three-days-in-1613604053 The Maryland suburbs have plenty of speed cameras. I incorrectly got a speeding ticket in PG county when some clown passed me at high speed and was clocked just as s/he passed me. The three pictures on the citation made it clear that it was the other vehicle, but the only option to contest it was to appear in person and so I reluctantly paid the ticket to avoid the hassle. DC cameras will not ticket you should you get stuck in an intersection when the light changes, but proceeding across an intersection when you are not sure that you will be able to clear the intersection is rather crappy driving behavior and is the primary cause of gridlock. I’ve managed to live in DC for decades without incurring any camera tickets. It’s really not that difficult. |
DC indeed has plenty of bad drivers, as does VA. |
LOL. C'mon now. It has been shown over and over that drivers from Virginia are the worst. |
I hope you realize that all these measures are being done as an intentional replacement for enforcement. I would also argue that they make things worse and create an environment that increases the amount of "self-centered jerks" on the road. But we can disagree about that. |
As long as you're in the intersection (over the crosswalk line) when the light turns red, it's legal and you won't get a ticket. You will get a link to the video if you ever get a red light ticket and can confirm for yourself whether the ticket was properly issued. I once got one of the tickets in MD (the only camera ticket I've ever gotten), watched the video, and I was clearly in the intersection when the light turned red. Called them up and ticket was voided. |
