Why does holding a baby, any baby, feel so wonderful?

I just think it's weird when people think they are doing you a favor by letting you hold their baby. Like sure I'll hold the baby to give you a break and I might enjoy it under certain circumstances (baby is sleeping or very happy, baby is relaxed with me and not looking at me like "uh you're not my mom," I'm not exhausted already, I don't have to hold baby indefinitely, I'm not trying to eat or drink at the moment).

But some people hand you their baby like they are bestowing a gift on you. Nope. You've assigned me a task that can range from pleasant to miserable depending on the situation. I don't live your baby like you do.

The only babies I have felt like holding are mine and my sister's babies. I like children but feel no desire to touch other people's babies.

Same. However I will snuggle any cat or kitten willing to be held.

Genetic imperative to procreate and survival of the fittest. We evolved from ancestors who loved this feeling and cared for their offspring. If you didn’t, your bloodline died and you didn’t pass down your indifferent genes. This is the way. When I hold a baby everything in me wants to protect it but that urge was multiplied infinitely when I held my own. Every time I hold or kiss my sons for a nanosecond I remember it again and would do anything for their wellbeing. It’s natural and normal!

Agreed! I met a neighbor’s 5 month old granddaughter the other day and it was amazing!

I had forgotten how delicious it is to hold babies and to have them hold your finger with their tiny hand.

DELICIOUS. The best feeling in the world!!!
