University of Montana - Missoula. It's the university for liberal arts and more alternative kids. But you can fly fish in the river than runs next to campus or get to multiple local ski resorts within 1-2 hour drive.
Montana State - Bozeman is the big Greek life and D1 athletics school. Definitely a wealthier student body. Vet and Ag science. But arguably access to better skiing - Big Sky and Bridger Bowl - but also dealing with a lot more tourist traffic and prices $$$$. Housing in Bozeman is out of control expensive. |

Under the radar for skiing, Michigan Tech & Northern Michigan University. I grew up in Vermont & went to grad school at CU Boulder. Mount Bohemia is legit:

| Northern Arizona university has snowbowl 20 minutes away and Sedona 50 minutes away for other outdoor activities. It is not very academic but a cute mountain town. Maybe look into the honors program? |
Not sure why pp is arguing about this. I’ve been to Denver & other places on the front range maybe a dozen or so times in my life, and I’ve experienced below zero temps multiple times. I would argue that it doesn’t feel that bad because it’s so dry, but that’s another discussion. |
