Risky to buy in a pyramid with split feeder schools? (Crossfield elementary)

There are certain parts of western Fairfax (Oak Hill/Floris/Crossfield/Navy) that have tended to see a lot of boundaries changes in the past (one area in particular bounced from Oakton to Westfield to South Lakes), so these areas might be particularly likely to be affected again.

They are claiming that their goals include eliminating split feeders and attendance islands, but it's too early to tell how it will shake out. If you really want Oakton as opposed to South Lakes and Chantilly (and Chantilly is great) you probably should be looking closer to Oakton HS itself.

Is there really a remote chance that houses in Franklin farm could be rezoned to South Lakes high?

No. There are several neighborhoods between Franklin Farm and Fox Mill that would go first.

I think someone needs to learn the definition of “remote”.

The SB is doing a Great Reset of boundaries. No one is safe, especially if they redraw all the lines.

I would not buy in Fairfax County if I were looking to buy a house in the DMV, and I am not a Republican or just saying that for political purposes as a prior poster insinuated.

The SB is making a mess of a lot of things, beyond what I even thought possible.

What a stupid thing to say.

PP likes to believe that the school board’s decimation of several school pyramids and continual uncertainty across the county will have no impact on young families’ willingness to move to Fairfax County.

Yes why doesn't this happen? It is like 5 minutes up the road.

Probably because everyone at the school was upset about being moved from Oakton to SLHS, if they have moved the kids from Carson to Hughes at the same time there would have been even more anger. Carson is one of the best MS in the county, moving from a strong HS to a well under performing high school and from AP to IB was already being fought, toss in moving form one of the stronger MS to a weak MS and you have an even uglier fight.

This is what I've heard...it's unlikely to happen because people (parents) will fight it. Has that changed?

I live in Fox Mill. Carson is closer than Hughes.

This board is always doom and gloom and especially during an election year. You're right, people won't move to one of the tech hubs of the country because of what some psychos on the internet are saying.

I live in Fox Mill and I think that it is faster and easier to get to Hughes. I also think it sucks that the kids go to Carson and the only people that they know moving to SL are pretty much the kids from Fox Mill. I also understand that Carson has many clubs and programs that are stronger then Hughes so most people don't want to move.

I’m a Democrat (or was), so this certainly isn’t about politics.

You must not get out much, because I’ve already seen this play out at the mere prospect of redistricting. Also, not to poke a hole in your “tech hub” theory, but there is this new thing called telework that allows people to live further away from the office and work from home most of the time. Believe it or not, people in tech get to take advantage of this as well.

And to add one additional point, this thread is replete with posters saying well, you should’ve heeded the warnings from a couple of years ago and not purchased the house that you did that now might get redistricted. So it’s funny to see you now say that people won’t or shouldn’t pay any attention to the threat of redistricting. It’s just absurdly inconsistent.

I, too, think it sucks the FM kids go to Carson and then get sent off to SL to start over making friends yet again.

You should have heeded the warnings from those who told you 5 fexking years ago that this is what the democrats were up to.

You had every opportunity to look at a work session or two on boundaries, read the draft and realize it wasn’t republicans being dramatic.

People like you chose this board and the prior board, and therefore gave them and their vision of “equity” the stamp of approval.
Now you’re mad because you might be forced to actually live it.
Unless you have enough money for private, you are just going to have to eat the dish you ordered.

That happens to lots of kids at Carson since it splits into so many different high schools. Your kids are far from the only ones who face that challenge.

There is no stability with school attendance zones going forward. They will be changed and I would not count on being in a specific school zone anymore. The county made their intentions of shuffling kids around clear with this new policy. Unless you are very close the to school or in a geographical limited boundary zone it’s not safe to assume that your kids will attend a specific school. The most stable attendance zones will likely be Fairfax HS and McLean HS due to their compact shape and geographically constrained parameters for attendance zones. Mclean HS boundaries are constrained on 3 sides by the Potomac River, falls church city schools, and Arlington. If you buy something above Westmoreland Drive it’s incredibly unlikely you will be moved out of McLean. Same thing for Fairfax city, everything in Fairfax city limits must attend the same HS, so if you buy something in Fairfax city limits, there is almost no chance your kid(s) will change schools.
