Dorm items your college freshman didn't use

+1000 on the desk lamp. It's a waste. It can be annoying to your roommate, takes up desk space and your PC will provide all the light you should need.

My student wasn’t allowed to have a steak or chopping knife, so did not use that or her cutting board. I wish we’d gotten her a small fridge with larger freezer section, so she could pack it with frozen meals. She did not need the extra throw pillows or throw rugs. She definitely needed a vacuum, for floor and to vacuum air filter during filter changes.

At one of my kid's schools, a charity puts out huge bins (dumpsters? I haven't actually seen them myself) for students to put the still good/usable stuff they want to get rid of at the end of the year. Then they have a huge yard sale and use the profits to fund their charity.
